PROJECT INFORMATION | The Security Service of Ukraine (Служба безпеки Україн, СБУ, or SSU) is entrusted with the defense of national sovereignty, constitutional order, territorial integrity, economical, scientific, technical, and defense potential of Ukraine, legal interests of the state, and civil rights. It is vested with the task of defending Ukraine from the intelligence and subversion activities of foreign special services, and from unlawful interference attempted by certain organizations--groups and individuals--as well with ensuring the protection of state secrets. Other duties include but are not limited to combating crimes that endanger the peace and security of mankind, terrorism, corruption, and organized criminal activities in the sphere of management and economy, as well as other unlawful acts immediately threatening Ukraine's vital interests. The SSU will occupy what was once the headquarters of the Committee for State Security or KDB (located at 32-35 Volodymyrska St, Kyiv). Regional offices--including those in Cherkasy, Kamyanets-Podilskiy, Lutsk, Malyn, Melitopol, Odessa, and Terebovlya--will also be reemployed and restored. The Buildings will be updated with security check points, including metal detector screening at the entrances and monitored surveillance cameras both in and outside. A keycard and alpha-numeric passcodes are required to enter different sections of the buildings. These are based on the security clearance of the card holder. The higher the security required, the more complicated the code. These are usually updated monthly and officers are informed at security briefings, although very high clearance areas may require more frequent updates. The buildings will each have emergency generators and all exterior windows will be bullet-proof. Each office location will also have a subbasement "level E" containing an emergency bunker and nonperishable rations for 100 people for 1 month. Currently, the southern corner of 35 Volodymyrska St functions as a museum. Unfortunately, this will be closed to minimize area foot-traffic and ensure security of the HQ building. What was the museum will begin to function as a library for intelligence personnel, it will be stock with mainly science journals, foreign language resources, and legal information. Finally, the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine will be restored and receive $275,000,000 of the project funding to hire top Ukrainian linguists, computer scientists, and legal experts as professors, to provide screening for professors and prospective trainees alike, and to increase the academy's library collection and online database/journal access. |
