PROJECT | Reconstruction of Deer Island Light |
PROJECT COST | 15,000,000.00 |
COMPLETION DATE | 05/07/2021 |
PROJECT INFORMATION | The United States Light House Service would allocate $15-million to the reconstruction of Deer Island Light, the remnants of which is located in Boston Harbor. The light station would be built as a "sparkplug" lighthouse, in a very similar manner to the original lighthouse that was located on the now ruined spot. The light will have a fifth-order Fresnel lens and will be constructed the same height as the previous sparkplug lighthouse to occupy the spot. Diesel motors will be used to power the lighthouse, as Boston is characteristically not a constantly sunny place. The motors will be located at the base of the structure and will have the proper exhaust and sound proofing necessary to make it work, and will be to the letter of the law of Boston's fire codes. The interior of the lighthouses, outside of the beacon itself, will include an office and storage area. There will be no keeper's quarters, as the light will be automated and only require maintenance. All of the doors, windows, and glass will be up to U.S.L.H.S. standards, meaning that they will be water-tight and able to sustain hard winds and the bashing of salty sea waves. A lightning rod will also be installed on top of the tower. |
