Statement from the Republic of Argentina |
The Government of the Republic of Argentina would like to address the nations of the world regarding the ongoing crisis on Antarctica. The Antarctic Continent was for decades a cultural and social player in the mindset of the southern communities of Argentina. Being only few hundred kilometers distant and less than two hours away on aircraft, it sparked the collective imagination, fasctinating explorers and researches alike. Being part of the continent considered an integral piece of the Republic of Argentina, to avoid creating conflict, any claim of sovereignty was kept internal and the issue was not brought up on the international scene to avoid sparking a conflict. This delicate status quo, balance of power and unspoken understanding of gentlemen to keep the continent at peace and for science was BROKEN by the Kingdom of Sweden with its unilateral and neo-colonial claim from a desk far away, 15,000km. Not only pretending to annex land to their cause, in total disregard of other nations histories and positions, but AN ENTIRE CONTINENT, something unheard of in human history. Just minutes ago an unarmed argentine icebreaker on a logistical and scientific mission was intercepted and collided by a swedish military vessel after a bullyish maneuver from it. Damage and casualties are as of now uncertain and measures are being undertaken to safeguard human lifes at sea. What is not uncertain is the Kingdom of Sweden's role in the execution of an act of war against the Republic of Argentina by engaging an unarmed ship despite all attempts from Argentina to avoid it. You will see here live audio and video recordings from the ARA Almirante Storni. (Recordings of the argentine ships radio contacts asking the swedes to move away plus video images of the swedish ship putting itself into collision course would be streamed publicly. AIS recording showing the argentine ship reducing its speed and mantaining a linear path while the aggresive swedish maneuvered boldly ignoring nautical and navigational safety procedures would also be transmitted) Thus, considering this act of aggression, Argentina will engage in military maneuvers to ensure its national security is up help. All Geneva Conventions will be respected and a exclusion zone will be declared below the 60°S, entering into effect at exactly 0000 hs. All swedish vessels or armed units entering said area will be considered hostile and acted upon. Once the swedish usurper has been removed from the continent, and everything is returned to the previous scenario, hostilities will be terminated and argentine combat units will withdraw from the continent. Antarctica belongs ultimately to the nations who actively incorporated them into their ways of life and national focus, such as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand, among others. Even Norway has a rich antarctic history and a certainly valid claim. But ultimately, it is a continent for peace and science, not for a far away nation to try to have a XX century “scramble for Africa” run of military conquest. |
