Monarchists Win in Referendum
Moscow, Russia - After being vacant for nearly a century Russia's throne has a new occupant, Emperor Mikhail II. Russians voted overwhelmingly in favor of restoring the monarchy after a state committee presented its findings before earlier this summer. The return of the Romanov Dynasty comes as a surprise to few despite the way in which the monarchy ended in 1917 and the violence that followed. Since the 1990s there has been considerable shift in opinion toward restoring the monarchy. Early last spring President Putin created the Extraordinary State Committee for the Restoration of Russia's Monarchy. The committee presented its findings and most eligible claimant earlier this summer concluded that, "Russia could only prosper with guidance of the benevolent hand by a constitutionally limited tsar."

Emperor Mikhail II (born Prince Georgi Andreyevich Romanov), a wealthy businessman and entrepreneur was recognized by the committee as the most eligible claimant.

Immediately after polls closed the result became clear. With 72% popular support and affirmation by the Duma the referendum passed and Georgi Romanov became Mikhail II effective at midnight September 1st and the office of President was abolished. Speaking with reporters outside polling locations most Russians believe a new prosperous era is on the horizon. "The tsar will make Russia great again" said one citizen leaving the polls in Novosibirsk.

Preparations are being made for the coronation ceremony which will take place next spring.
