Romania Finally Out of Isolationism

by Stelian Lazar

Since the reinstation of the monarchy in Romanian politics in 1999 with late King Augustin of Romania taking absolute power, the country has been in a state of complete isolationism from the rest of the world. Following Romania's political silence, King Augustin began reforms all across the country, from military to education to the working class, Romania changed as a whole. Whether that was for the best or the worse varies on who you ask, but the reforms echoed through Romania. With the passing of King Augustin in 2011, his two children, Cristofor and Cosmina, have become King and Queen of Romania, turning the country into a diarchy.

While many would agree that the isolationism that Romania had entered returned the country into stability and the reforms that followed were needed and positive, however, the economy has suffered greatly. King Cristofor has understood Romania's crippling economy and with the support of his co-ruler and sister, Queen Cosmina, the monarchs have promised that soon Romania would re-enter the national stage. Contact with foreign states have begun and embassies have started to open once again after a decade. A quote from King Cristofor's speech explained his motivations: "I respect my father and the decisions that he has made, but it is without a doubt that Romania needs to re-enter the politics of the world for the betterment of her people, or else our economy may become permanently crippled." The King's speech was welcomed by the people of Romania and many agree with his motivation. The Queen, however, has remained silent about the decision and one can only speculate that her motivations are the same as her brother's.

Some Romanians speculate that the Queen's motivations are different, however, as the Queen has forwarded many purchases for the Royal Land Forces, Air Forces, and Naval Forces to the Counts of the Departments. Sources have also revealed that the Queen and Nicusor Kogalniceaunu, the Minister of Defence and Count of Centru, have given funds to foreign powers in return for military equipment. The meaning behind the purchases remained classified, but speculations continue as the Queen has stated before that she wishes to retake lost Romanian lands.
