Prisoner Pierre was a new prisoner. The 20 year old had been banged up within the walls Manakara Prison for less than 6 months but already he grew tired of the poor conditions of the prison. He sat with his small gang he had developed within the yard. A yard barely big enough to fit a quarter of the over 1,000 prison population. The Prison life within Makara was tough and uncomfortable. 50% of those detained had never even been trialled, despite being against the constitution of Madagascar. Food shortages were common and prisoners spend 14 hours a day sharing a room with 200 people despite the room being designed for only 40. Sleeping nose to feet they cram into this tiny dirty flea ridden room despite the cramp being far too painful. Prisoners had no access to toiletries and washing facilities were unreliable and prone to breaking. The hot African sun would create a warm and unbearable temperature within the facility.

Food time brought the prisoners haemorrhaging to the server. The 2 meals a day barely covered the nutritional requirements of the children kept within the block let along Pierre and the others. A bowl of slop and questionable meat was all that was served to the men. Pierre missed the homecooked food of his mother and father's house in the rural part of the state. Today was his mother's birthday, the day he knew his younger siblings would be celebrating but would they be missing him? Of course, Pierre knew that he shouldn't of been here and the holding of a trial would of proved this but Madagascar's justice system was infamously slow with only 2 days of court being held a year.

Pierre and his gang pushed his way past the weaker members of the prison trying to get there before the food runs out but it was too late. A prison officer was scraping the last remnants of the disgusting slop from the spoon

"What the Hell?" Pierre exclaimed, " you barely even fed half of the block?"

The officer shrugged, continuing to throw the bowl to the food. A rage filled Pierre, a moment of madness. His fist clenched, heading straight towards the officers head. A thump filled the air as the officer fell straight to the dirt. Pierre followed up with kicks to the ribs of the officer. To the left and the right a further 5 officers were swarmed and dragged from their positions in the yard and into the dorms.

"Screw you pig"

Pierre and his gang carried the officer by the limbs into their cell block. On the guard towers, officers would begin to take aim firing tear gas into the yard but by now the situation was out of control. Live rounds were fired into the mass of prisoners adding further fuel to the fire and prisoners to fall to the floor. Gang members fashioned homemade shanks and bats and set to work breaking into the dormitory of the next door gang while another looked for the solitary confinement prisoners.

The walls of steel and wire stood between the prisoners and freedom.
