SPECIAL AGENTS AND OFFICERS

Badge_of_the_United_States_Secret_Service_%281971%E2%80%932003%29.png

The special agents and officers of the United States Secret Service make up one of the most well-known law enforcement programs of the United States and the supreme protective service in the world. Legislation which created the Secret Service was on President Lincoln's desk the night he was assassinated. Later that year in 1865, it was formally created under the Department of The Treasury to investigate the counterfeiting of American currency which was an exceptional problem at the time. It would not be until 1901, after the assassination of President William McKinley, that Congress directed the Secret Service to begin protecting the President of the United States. Since then, the Secret Service still retains its duel-purpose of investigating counterfeiting/financial crimes as well as protective services for the President, Vice President, and embassies. Three different kinds of law enforcement agents exist within the service so that it can successfully conduct its mission: Special Agent, Special Officer, and Uniformed Division Officer.

SPECIAL AGENTS

img01.jpg

The Special Agents of the United States Secret Service are the original law enforcement specialist of the agency. These agents work Washington D.C. as well as field offices around the country and the world. The duty of special agents varies from investigative work - which can include both financial crimes as well as threats against the President - as well as being part of a protective detail for the President, Vice President, or visiting leaders. These agents have jurisdiction throughout the entire United States and are empowered to enforce federal law. While these agents are normally dedicated to supporting the rest of the service by performing investigations, they can perform any of the duties of the other officers in the service.

SPECIAL OFFICERS

The Special Officers of The United States Secret Service are federal agents but, similar to the U.S. Marshals, use a title other than "Special Agent". Unlike Secret Service Special Agents who spend much of their time conducting investigations, Special Officers are exclusively dedicated to participating in protective services. While this does include directly protecting individuals such as the President, this also includes a vast variety of support roles such as the snipers on top of the White House, maintaining communications equipment, and being especially trained in tactically driving vehicles for VIPs. Special Officers, like Special Agents, are stationed all around the country and protect a variety of people, including the President of The United States.

UNIFORMED DIVISION OFFICERS

The Uniformed Division Officers of the United States Secret Service is similar to the U.S. Capitol Police and is responsible with protecting the White House Complex as well as foreign embassies in Washington D.C. Originally formed as the White House Police, the Uniformed Division Officers today are a highly tactical division of the Secret Service. The officers are generally seen in uniform, as their name implies, and tend to be heavily armed. They often serve as a well-trained and highly-visible "hard deterrent" to any would-be trouble-makers or those that may wish America's most important leaders harm. The division has numerous unique duties ranging from protecting the White House such as through the Emergency Response Team, to forming counter-assault teams, to directly protecting foreign embassies, and even operating a canine unit.

FIELD OFFICES

HEADQUARTERS
The Secret Service Headquarters is located in Washington D.C. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the Secret Service not just in America, but the entire world. From this location, the agency coordinates with Field Offices throughout the world to ensure that protection details and special operations work smoothly.

FIELD OFFICE
The largest of all the offices which are located in metropolitan areas, travel hubs, and populous places where there is generally a high demand for protective and investigative services. These offices are led by a special agent-in-charge who is also responsible for the management and staffing of inferior offices within the field office's district.

RESIDENT OFFICE
The next largest office after a field office. A resident agent-in-charge supervises the office, which is staffed by at least ten special agents, as well as an office manager, and typically an investigative assistant.

RESIDENT AGENCY
Normally located in remote and rural areas where a field office or resident office is not economically feasible. A resident agency is led by a senior special agent and staffed by additional special agents as dictated by the workload.

DOMICILE
Normally a single special agent - or in some cases two agents who are married - who works out of a residence. In some instances, the special agent works out of another agency's office space, such as that of a U.S. Attorney's Office or local police department.
