Sudan's military seizes power from President Al-Bashir

Sudan's military has overthrown and arrested President Omar Al-Bashir after months of protests against his nearly 30-year rule.

In a statement, General Awad Ibn Auf, head of the Supreme Security Committee - a body comprised of the armed forces, police, and other security agencies - said Al-Bashir had been arrested and taken to a 'safe place'.

In place of the President, the Transitional Military Council, headed by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been established, assuming all legislative and executive powers. Despite this highly controversial interference of the military, the Council has assured the Sudanese people to prepare for free and fair elections. The Sudanese people last experienced an election in 1989, days prior to now deposed President Al-Bashir overthrowing the democratic government in a coup.

For the last 30 years, Sudan has been under the dictatorial thumb of President Al-Bashir, plagued by crippling corruption, severe economic conditions and widespread internal conflict. It was only on this 30 year anniversary that pro-democratic protesters have experience some success, though not to be seen for a while.

Before democratic elections are to be held, the Transitional Military Council have vowed to reconstruct torn Sudan and to remove the 'foul element's' of Al-Bashir's dictatorship. Widespread arrests of corrupt government and military officials is already under way, with over 200 reportedly facing charges. It is unknown what sentence those found guilty of corruption will face, however it is thought that many will face the death penalty, including deposed Al-Bashir.

General Al-Burkan, Chairman of the Transitional Military Council and current de facto President of Sudan, has revoked the harsh limits imposed upon Sudan by the former government. This includes the abolishment of strict Sharia Law, the opening up of Sudan to foreign and independent media and the release of political prisoners.

The Government of The Republic of Ireland would watch developments in Sudan very closely as the traditional military council assumes the mantlehood of power over the country. Ireland would send 12,000,000 punts as a gift of friendship for Sudan and the new regime intended for use in improving infrastructure, education, and the quality of life for the poor and working classes.
