OPERATION OSMIUM
SWEDISH ARMED FORCES
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE

OFFICIAL OPERATION ORDER
DECEMBER 1997
TOP SECRET

Situation Report
With the economic situation in Russia hitting an all-time low, a clear and unsubstantiated delay in the Global Assembly to pass resolution to reduce the risk of further economic decline and continued civil unrest in Russia threatening the lives of senior dignitaries in Moscow it was clear the Baltic Sea was likely to become an intelligence-gathering goldmine and needless to say a focal point of international governments seeking extraction of their delegation from the Russian capital. The request received from the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to strategically position military assets in anticipation for deployment was only a further indicator of the thought process of other foreign governments which, in turn, directly threatens the integrity of Swedish national security and could see an unprecedented level of military naval and aerial assets in and around Scandinavia, specifically the Baltic Sea.

TOP SECRET
Preparation and Consolidation
The preparation of Operation Osmium was without a doubt one of the most memorable in the Swedish Royal Navy's recent history as it would not only see the very first deployment of the highly-advanced stealth corvettes recently purchased by the Department of Defence, Defence Materiel Administration but it would also see the support of the French replacement for the Orion-Class Intelligence Vessel, the Dupuy-de-Lôme Intelligence Vessel. The intelligence vessel, obtained from Sparrow Industries and secured under a Disclosure Agreement very similar in nature to the one securing the U-2 Spyplane between the United States, the United Kingdom and Sweden. Deploying these two incredibly modern and sophisticated ships together in a joint operation to secure the Baltic Sea as undeniably a huge achievement for the Navy and even more so for the Baltic states keen to see a rapidly growing shipping lane secured from hostility.

The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, enclosed by by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, northeast Germany, Poland, Russia and the North and Central European Plain. It includes the Gulf of Bothnia, Bay of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga and the Bay of Gdansk, it's connected by artificial waterways to the White Sea via the White Sea-Baltic Canal and to the German Bight of the North Sea via the Kiel Canal. It's position is prominent in Europe and one of the most famous seas on the globe.

...and to combat it was primarily the Visby-Class Corvettes of the 1st Naval Warfare Flotilla, Alpha Corvette Division - equipped with the necessary ammunition to support the armament of a Bofors 57mm Mk3 naval gun, eight RBS15 Mk2 anti-ship missile launchers, four 400mm torpedo launchers, ASW 127mm rocker-powered grenade launchers and a number of mines and depths charges. In addition the vessel was stocked with the necessary rations of food, water and other necessities onboard to ensure a comfortable living condition whilst at sea for prolonged periods of time. Although not far from home the vessels were topped up with the necessary fuels, including aviation fuel for the aircraft due to be secured on the singular helicopter pad aboard each vessel. The ships were each crewed with forty three crew members, not including the additional eight flight crew due to arrive from Ronnebay Naval Airbase's Naval Air Wing, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 11, flying the Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma which was also fully fuelled. Additionally, the formerly mentioned Dupuy-de-Lôme Intelligence Vessel, manned by a crew of one hundred and four from the 2nd Naval Warfare Flotilla, Bravo Support Division based at Muskö Naval Base ensure that this too was fully fuelled and equipped with essentials for the deployment; in addition to the necessary ammunition to arm the two 12.7mm M2 Browning machine guns.

Within a matter of a few hours the crews of the Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma's assigned callsigns WIDOW-11 and WIDOW-12 would board and depart for Karlskrona Naval Base where they with amalgamate crews in line with operational objective OO-1A. The operation had begun.

Operation Osmium is finalised and declared as concluded by the Department of Defence - the classification given on the Operational Directive remains in situ until otherwise determined. All deployed equipment, personnel and assets are returned to their respective home positions.
