Peter Hultqvist, Secretary of Defence, makes an encrypted telephone call from his private office in Sweden to the Spanish Ministry of Defence.
Before Secretary Hultqvist speaks his aide requests the Spanish ensure the call is secure from their end, on a local level.

[Zak]

Teófila Martínez, the most senior politician within the Ministry of Defence under the Minister of Defence would answer the call, she would make sure that the call was encrypted on her end.

"Good afternoon, this is Teófila Martínez speaking, how can I help you?"

[Connor]

"Minister Martínez, it's Secretary Hultqvist calling from Sweden... I am responsible for the Department of Defence. How do you do?"

 

[Zak]

The SECRETARY leaned back into her armchair as she sipped on her coffee as she listened into the call from the Swedish politician.

"I am very sell, the usual, busy running a department. How can I be of service to you today then?"

 

[Connor]

"Well, it's more how can Sweden be of service to you... It's no secret that Spain has recently been heavily purchasing military equipment and we regularly have the Swedish Security and Intelligence Service monitor international expenditure, especially of military-grade materiel. I'd like to assist in the defence of Spanish mainland and global interests with the Swedish Air Force."

 

[Zak]

"Spain has currently been undergoing a military expansion due to the utter neglect from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party when they were in power, they left our Armed Forces in the ditch so it has been the mission of the new government to return the Spanish Armed Forces to its former glory. I gratefully appreciate your offer and Spain will always appreciate Sweden as a wonderful friend, many Swedes visit Spain to escape the cold each year and they are always welcome here. We were actually going to make contact with your government soon anyway because our attention was brought to some very nice Swedish technology the Spanish Army could benefit from."

 

[Connor]

"Sweden is at the forefront of modern technology and currently manages one of the most sophisticated anti-air and anti-surface defence networks in the world with a combination of different anti-air systems and rapid reaction forces in ground, air and maritime capacities. Whilst you grow we are happy to extend our network into Spain on a temporary basis, we will take the responsibility of airspace defence and maritime patrol allowing you to focus on the research and development of your armed forces branches."

Peter clears his throat before continuing...

"Sweden has always been a loyal ally. Our economy is rapidly expanding as we reach a worth of almost eighty billion dollars and an armed forces unmatched by many European states. Allowing our forces to take the pressure away for a short period of time will undoubtedly allow Spain to grow to a similar capacity"

 

[Zak]

"We thank you for your kind offer, I have always said the Swedish people are very hospitable and you are no exception Secretary. The Spanish Armed Forces are currently undergoing a mass expansion first to protect our homeland and then expand to where we can have the ability to deploy around the world in many cases such as training with other militaries or even using our personnel for humanitarian purposes. I, on behalf of my country greatfully respect your offer."

 

[Connor]

"Marvellous, well I have squadrons of fighter jets ready for deployment at the click of my fingers, you tell me the location and I'll have them sent there. We also have the most advanced Patriot missile system in the world which cost us billions in production costs - I cam confident I'd be able to have the entirety of Spanish mainland covered with anti-air capabilities in little over a week."

Peter smiles, making notes of the conversation throughout.

"This will be a tremendous opportunity for Swedish active personnel to train Spanish forces, offloading their own deployment experiences and building the relationship between Sweden and Spain. How exciting!"

 

[Zak]

"As I spoke earlier, Spain has been looking to introduce some fantastic Swedish equipment into its army and I must admit, we have shown quite an interest in the Bandvagn 206 and the Combat Vehicle 90, are these products for sale?"

 

[Connor]

"Both of these products are very close to Swedish hearts, we would want to see diligence and expertise displayed by your armed forces prior to sale. Our deployment to Spain in order to assist in the defence of your borders would be an excellent opportunity for you to show this... ordinarily these products are only sold within the Nordic Council as our neighbours, obviously, have had the chance to show their extreme capabilities to perform in a manner we'd expect with locally manufactured products"

"I understand this, I will get back to you on your proposal Secretary and I'm sure that the partnership between Sweden and Spain is going to flourish well."

 

[Connor]

"How long should we expect the consultation period to be? I will brief my team in preparation"

"Uh... I have to attend a meeting with the new Defence Minister and the Prime Minister. I shall consult them on partnership being built between Spain and Sweden." The phone call would be abruptly ended as Teófila headed off to a meeting with her colleagues.

 

[Connor]

Secretary Hultqvist stares blankly at the wall at the opposite side of his office whilst holding the phone to his ear, listening to the deafening constant tone indicating the fact the line had been cut dead. The Swedish Secretary of Defence, one of the most senior cabinet members in the country, and a highly respect figure had just been hung up on by the Spanish. Without saying a word or even diverting his gaze, he returns the phone to the receiver and mumbles in a thick Swedish tone...

"Sov bra, tik. Kaboom." he chuckles to himself, rolling his fountain pen between his fingers before returning to his usual duties.

What a bitter mistake.
