It is with deepest regret that I extend my profound condolences to you, your government, and the people of the United Kingdom for the recent terrorist suicide bombings that claimed 104 innocent lives. This cowardly and barbaric act is an affront to humanity, and the responsibility is unambiguous: Al-Qaeda must be held accountable for the devastation its religious fanaticism has wrought upon our civilized societies.
Thailand and the United Kingdom have only recently normalized our relationship following a period of disengagement, which stemmed from our nation’s failure to prevent a tragic terrorist attack on the British Embassy. That history weighs heavily on us, and we are determined to ensure such vulnerabilities are never repeated.
In this challenging time, plagued by the specter of religious extremism, the Socialist Republic of Thailand stands in unwavering solidarity with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Since the news of this heinous attack reached our shores, the Thai people have spoken with one voice, passing a referendum that declares war on Al-Qaeda and its inexcusable disregard for innocent British lives.
We have long admired the United Kingdom as a bastion of stability and democratic principles, where peaceful transitions of power through regular elections have been a hallmark of your governance. This act of violence is a stark and painful deviation from the peace your nation has long enjoyed, and it underscores the urgent need for united, decisive action against those who seek to undermine our collective security.
At present, the Thai Foreign Ministry’s Office of Foreign Intelligence (OFI) is actively gathering open-source intelligence and coordinating with other nations to acquire information on the structure, operations, and locations of Al-Qaeda. We are preparing to launch a global campaign against this organization, contingent on the availability of actionable intelligence and strict adherence to international law.
Thailand is ready and willing to provide any assistance the United Kingdom may require during this time of crisis. Rest assured, Prime Minister, that you will always find a steadfast ally in Thailand, committed to supporting you in this fight against terrorism and in defending the values that bind our nations.
With deepest sympathy and resolute determination,
Thaksin Shinawatra
Prime Minister
Republic of Thailand
