The streets of Barcelona had come to a standstill. Las Ramblas (one of the most famous and iconic boulevards in Barcelona) was rammed to the core with people protesting against the new Spanish Prime Minister being elected who was against allowing a referendum for Catalan independence. Gabriel Rufián was leading the charge with members of the Republican Left of Catalonia who is the oldest political party in Catalan politics that has supported the idea of a sovereign Catalan nation for the entirety of its existence spanning Northern Catalonia in France and Alghero in Italy.

Through the night, Catalan President Carles Puigdemont had announced plans for a "binding" referendum on independence in the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia with or without the consent of the Spanish institutions.
