Suva, Fiji- June 29th, 1997 Local activists organize reflection thinking in Suva grand park. The highly peaceful demonstration was in respects to the incoming news from the Moldovan incident which has sparked a potential armed conflict in the region. Armed with protest signs and free speech these university students and staff gathered to make the stance of the majority of the island of Fiji known. "War is a coward's alternative to thought. It serves no purpose but to silence an opponent due to lack of ability to reason. It plagues our matavuvale [family], our brothers and sisters of Vuravura [Earth]." says activist Patti Ganila. The crowd began the sit with a traditional hakka and peace hymn. According to some sources the crowd numbered at one point around two hundred. During the midday rain the crowd disperse to take naps in hammocks on the beaches. They reconvened in the later hours to sing traditional hymns and eat kokada. "We just want to see every breathing soul flourish into something Kalou [God] intended it to be. War pulls man off that path, placed on one that another man have forged for them." says Patti Ganila who's grandfather served for Fiji during world war two. President Mara is expected to make a statement on the conflict in the upcoming days. Stay happy Fiji, - Teraru Morah- Fijian Sun | |
