India-Myanmar Friendship Road Which Begins at Moreh in India
by Jaideep Bose
Yesterday on the 20th of January 1995, Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and the Ministry of External Affairs have announced that after the re-opening of India-Myanmar diplomacy that India would issue free visas to any Myanmar citizen that would apply for them for the following two weeks. The Union of Myanmar have also agreed in issuing free visas for the following two weeks to any Indian citizen who applies for them. It is both nations' hopes that with these temporarily free visas, tourism and trade between the two nations will begin to skyrocket and in turn boost the economy of both nations.
All diplomacy between India and Myanmar had been cut-off during the military dictatorship and the suppression of democracy within the nation via intimidation and violence. However, with the recent reinstatement of democracy within the nation India re-opened these relations and the government hopes that the free visas will be one of many steps towards a lasting and flourishing relationship between the two nations. Sources state that other potential steps could be the upgrade of the India-Myanmar Friendship Road, a free trade agreement, trade of resources, and potentially even military collaborations. Just how far these militaristic collaborations will go however has yet to be determined or said.
It was not long ago that India's economy nearly collapsed into a great depression and therefore it should be looked upon with excitement and hope that the Indian economy survives and that it may soon thrive.
