The Most Unexpected Result Ever

TRT%20Logo.png

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Today saw the release of the list compiled by The Sultan, which bestows seven people with the title of Pasha, and 81 people with the title of Bey. These 88 nobles will form half of the The Royal Diet, meaning that the composition of this list is pivotal in who can become the next government for Turkey. At the present time, the elected half of The Diet consists of 27 members of The Ottoman Restorationists, 35 liberals from The Party For Freedom, and 26 members of The Kurdish Workers' Party, also known as The PKK. While the Party For Freedom was the winner of election by netting around 40% of the seats in The Diet, they do not have enough to form a government, since the remaining 60% is under the control of The Restorationists and PKK.

Admittedly, they could form a government if they were to continue the blocking of PKK members that had been instigated by The Restorationists in their last days in office, however that's if we disregard the nobles. These 88, depending on their political allegiances, will decide who forms the next administration."

The newscaster then revealed a sheet of paper.

"This piece of paper contains the list of names, and their registered political allegiances, that shall become nobles in The Diet. TRT has compiled this and has been able to create this diagram to demonstrate the situation that now exists in The Diet."

"To provide a brief explanation. Every square within a bright green block represents a seat that is occupied by an elected member of The Diet. All squares in the burgundy block are nobles. Meanwhile, the pale green blocks on the left side between the two sides of The Diet represent the crossbenchers. The crossbenchers are nobles who are independent, and do not have any political allegiance. By having The Restorationists, due to their being the former government, on the government side of the chamber, and The PKK and Party For Freedom on the other as The Opposition, we can get an idea of the parliamentary arithmetic, and whether any of the parties can form a government by themselves.

At the present time, 26 of the seats, which are occupied by The PKK, are not able to be occupied, which reduces the total from 176 seats to 150. This means that any party that has over 75 seats can form a government. Unfortunately, neither of the parties able to take their seats can do so. The Restorationists, surprisingly, are actually a seat less than their liberal counterparts. With the liberals at 69 seats, and the monarchists at 68, it is theoretically possible that either party could form a minority government. However, this would mean they would be at the mercy of the crossbenchers, who would be the true deciders of whether a piece of legislation put forward by the government passes or not. As such, it would be a gamble for them, which may result in a horrifically ineffective administration."

The newscaster then reached up to press his earpiece more firmly into his ear to listen to what was being whispered to him.

"We interrupt this presentation to bring you breaking news! The Restorationist leader, Olağan Bilgelik, has announced that he will be seeking a coalition with The Party For Freedom. Citing the fact that, as economic and social pragmatists, they are more than willing to explore the social and economically liberal ideas that The Party For Freedom support. Asked whether he will encounter problems with other areas, Mr. Bilgelik responded that: 'I am sure that both sides shall, as reasonable human beings, be honest and forthright in our discontent for any ideas that do not match our respective agendas. As such, we will be able to discuss, compromise, and if a middle ground can't be found, I am sure both sides can agree to postpone trying to push that particular topic until the results of the next election are found. After all, any party may achieve a majority in The Diet after a successful campaign!'"
