OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER OF LIGHTHOUSES |
ENCRYPTED MESSAGE |
TO: Chief Executive of The Northern Lighthouse Board of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland ( Jamie )
FROM: Stirling Hawk, Commissioner of Lighthouses, United States Lighthouse Service
Good afternoon,
Very Respectfully,
Donald Brooks
Commissioner of Lighthouses
Good afternoon,
Our records indicate that during the Gore Administration, Neist Point Lighthouse directly turned over to President Gore as a gift from Prime Minister Evans. Neist Point Lighthouse was accepted as a gift to the Office of The President - a place that future American presidents can hopefully use to meet with British diplomats in a private, secluded place for the most private of negotiations. On behalf of the White House, and the American People, I want to underscore how grateful and thankful we are for this gift from the United Kingdom. If nothing else, the gift of this lighthouse was, and continues to be a significant gesture from the United Kingdom to the United States.
The United States Congress is expected to approve additional funding for restoration and construction of lighthouses here in the United States. A portion of that funding is to ensure that Neist Point Lighthouse continues to operate to the standards of the Northern Lighthouse Board and that it continues to be a place that the current president and former presidents of the United States be able to travel to, especially when it concerns matters between the United States and the United Kingdom.
I am writing to inform you that a plaque will be in place in remembrance of the meeting between President Gore, His Highness Prince Charles, and former Prime Minister Evans, as well as some other routine maintenance to the lighthouse and quarters on the property. This message is out of respect and courtesy from one mariner to another.
