The United States Secretary of the Navy, deciding that LCS are only good to a certain extent, has sent outs a notification to the world that the US will be taking any and all bids for a new frigate seriously. Although, a few outlines have been made on what the Navy is ideally searching for:
  • An excellent balance of weapons and sensors and is the perfect example for a multi-role frigate.
  • Displacement of around 4,500 to 6,000 tons
  • A combined diesel and gas turbine (COGAG) propulsion with 2 diesel engines

SUBJECT: US Bid for a Multi-Role Frigate
RECIPIENT: United States Secretary of The Navy
SECURITY: Secret

Mister Secretary,

I received word of the Navy's interest in a multi-role frigate. I consulted with the Crown and the rest of the government, both of which were in agreement that I should offer the Fridtjof Nansen-class frigate as a possibility for use by the United States Navy. Norway's border with the former Soviet Union (now Russia) has necessitated that we remain up-to-date in our maritime and air capabilities.

The weapons and sensors on the Fridtjof Nansen-class are state-of-the-art and numerous, as I'm sure you're aware. However, since the Ministry of Defense doesn't officially disclose the following, I'll inform you that these frigates are also capable of operating with the following weapons/alternatives as well:
1 x Otobreda 127 mm/54 gun to replace the 76 mm
1 x spare 76mm OTO Melara Super Rapid gun
1 x spare CIWS gun w/ caliber 40 mm or less
1 x spare 8-cell Mk41 VLS launchers
Low cost ASROC
ECM: Active Off-board Decoy
3 x Protector (RWS) (Sea Protector)

The displacement of the ships with a full load is 5,290 tons.
For propulsion, the frigates do have two BAZAN BRAVO diesel engines for cruising, and additionally an additional GE LM2500 gas turbine for high speed running.
The speed is 27+ knots, and the operational range is 4,500 nmi.

These are the bare basics of the Fridtjof Nansen-class frigate. I didn't disclose the various weapons and electronic countermeasures of the vessel, but I imagine you have such information readily available. If you would like me to go into more detail, or would like to enter into further negotiations, please inform me.

Fair Winds and Following Seas,

Ingvar
Chief of Defense of The Norwegian Armed Forces
