CONTEXT

On the advice of the National Security Council, members of the President's Cabinet, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the President has ordered four troops of SEAL Team Six to mobilize and prepare for emergency deployment to Vatican City in order to secure the American Embassy there. Also, a C-130J-30 from the 30th Airlift Squadron at Pope Air Force Base was mobilized and a KC-10 from RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom was mobilized as well. There would soon be an operation to bring the Navy SEALs from the United States to the American Embassy at the Vatican Embassy. The appropriate officials at RAF Mildenhall and the Royal Air Force were informed that the KC-10 was preparing to deploy in support of an American Air Force mission in the Eastern North Atlantic Ocean.

DEPLOYMENT ORDERS

TOP SECRET

The C-130J-30 Super Hercules was flown from Pope Air Force Base to Naval Air Station Oceania in Virginia. Once there, the aircraft would be refueled and the pilots would prepare for a prolonged journey over the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. 64 operators from SEAL Team Six were briefed on their mission and loaded onto the aircraft with their equipment and parachutes. The aircraft was properly fueled, all pre-flight checks were done, and the aircraft was lined up on the runway at Naval Air Station Oceana. Clearance was given from NAS Oceana and the aircraft took off.

The C-130J-30 would rise to its cruising altitude and fly at its cruising speed in the most direct direction to (40.917119, -32.882522). At the same time, one KC-10 from RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom was fueled, staffed, and all of the pre-flight checks were done so that it would be prepared to launch. The aircraft would launch at the appropriate time so that it could rendezvous with the C-130J-30 at (40.917119, -32.882522) and refuel it. When the two aircraft met at the aforementioned point, the KC-10 would go through standard procedures to refuel the C-130J-30 with more than enough fuel to make it to Gibraltar and land at the airport there. Afterwards, the KC-130 would take the same (direct) route back to RAF Mildenhall.

The United Kingdom would be securely given the intimate details of when the KC-10 would leave, and renter, British airspace. Also, the British would be informed shortly before the C-130-J30 would enter the Strait of Gibraltar. The aircraft would identify itself and request clearance to land at Gibraltar, where it would then refuel and prepare to take off again for Rome.

These aircraft would not fly into the airspace of any country other than the United States and the United Kingdom.

Once, the US C-130J-30 and the KC-10 would be close enough to appear off the Portuguese Air Force Radars in the Lajes Airfield, in the Azores. Two x F-16s from the 206th Squadron would be prepared and armed to check these incoming objects. Not knowing what these objects belonged to, it was deemed necessary to investigate and protect national security, and prevent any incursion into Portuguese Airspace. The F-16s would be armed with 1 × 20 mm (0.787 in) M61A1 Vulcan 6-barrel rotary cannon, 511 rounds; 2 x AIM-9 Sidewinder, 3 x AIM-120 AMRAAM; 2x Fuel Tanks, alongside its avionics and counter-measure.

Once the F-16s were in communication and radar range with the planes, they would contact them as friendly as possible.
“We are F-16s from the Portuguese Air Force on a patrol mission, we had contact information by our radar from your aircraft, please inform of your country of origin and of your business.”

The Portuguese F-16s would likely intercept the C-130J-30 and the KC-10 when the aircraft were preparing to begin the refueling process, or when refueling was taking place. Regardless, the C-130J-30 was the mission leader and would be the one to respond to the Portuguese aircraft. The pilots spoke slowly and clearly so that interpretation of American English would not be any kind of a problem. The United States and Portugal had always had a cordial relationship in modern history, so this was interpreted as the Portuguese just defending their sovereign airspace as any other country would.

"Portuguese F-16s, this is Romeo-Whiskey-Niner transmitting on behalf of ourselves and Four-Bravo-Golf. We are United States Air Force aircraft conducting a refueling mission approximately one-hundred miles outside of Portuguese airspace. We are operating in international airspace, within international law, and we will not enter Portuguese airspace. Over."

The leading pilot would be relieved it was the Americans and relay that to the main base. He was happy that it was not the Thai's again zipping around where they shouldn't belong.

"Romeo-Whiskey-Nine, we are glad to hear a familiar and friendly voice! Carry as you will, we will be here in case you need us." He would notice that they were starting to do refueling procedures and relay that to the Base, where again another order would be given.

"Romeo-Whiskey-Nine, our base as informed us that you are more than welcome to come a refuel at our base in the Azores. The amount of fuel you can receive would be greater than via areal means, and it will get you there faster. You can also restock your pilots with food and provisions too if you need" He would await for an answer.

"Portuguese F-16s, your offer for assistance is greatly appreciated. However, Romeo-Whiskey-Niner is on a critical priority mission and does not have time to land. But, Four-Bravo-Gulf could take the opportunity to refuel and replenish, if that would be acceptable.... We would really love the opportunity to stop here on the way back, but I guess that'll be up to the politicians. Over," the pilot of the C-130J-30 said.

"Permission granted! Once you return from your mission, inform the Lajes Airbase of your arrival, and we will prepare the necessary arrangements. Godspeed and Good Luck!" With that, the F-16s would escort the KC-10 back to the Lajes Airbase and oversee its refueling process and restocking while engaging with them and telling their experiences of their careers, after it the refueling was done, Port Wine bottles and a few souvenirs would be given to the Pilots as a parting gift. The F-16s would escort the KC-10 once more until it was out of the Portuguese Airspace, after expressing their goodbyes they would return to base to fill their mission report.

The KC-10 would indeed land at the airport designated by the Portuguese after getting confirmation from the American command at RAF Mildenhall that they could do so. The crew of the KC-10 would abide by all Portuguese air rules and regulations while flying in their airspace. Once they landed, the KC-10 would refuel and, if allowed, the crew would temporarily depart the aircraft to stretch their legs before preparing to fly back to England.

The C-130J-30 continued towards Rome. It would fly through to the Strait of Gibraltar and make contact with British RAF air traffic control at Gibraltar's international airport. The aircraft would, with the direction of the British, land at the airport and quickly begin the process of refueling as soon as possible. Once the refueling was complete, preflight checks were done so that the aircraft could take off again and make its final leg of the journey to Rome. Once they were given the all clear by the British, the flight would take off from Gibraltar and fly to Rome at its cruising speed and altitude.

Secret unless contextual possible.

Moments after taking off from Gibraltar's international airport's tarmac, thr American aircraft reached the broad reach of HTMS Borommarachathirat II's Thales LW08 long-range search radar and Saab Sea Giraffe AMD 3D surveillance radar. With their outstanding range and precision, this equipment supported the Thai warship to scan airspace with exceptional eyes. Because of the proximity of Gibraltar's international airport to the Thai vessel's stationing area in the Mediterranean, the HTMS Ramrachathirat's watchful and highly trained men were quick to identify the aircraft's ascension. The radar's automatic tracking system seamlessly relayed this information, ensuring that the detection of the British aircraft was instantly reflected on the Situational Awareness Display (SAD), Tactical Power Display (TPD), and Maritime Awareness Domain (MAD) displays at the Republic Thai Armed Forces (RTAF) HQ. Given the public's awareness of the Thai deployment and their officially friendly position, the crew aboard the HTMS Ramrachathirat followed standard protocols for such meetings. They started contact with the American aircraft via secure, direct channels built specifically for aerial contact. They communicated with professionalism and clarity, and their tone was kind and welcoming.

"Good day, good day!" How are you doing today? Leaving from the Gibraltar's international airport? According to what we have read, the weather there is excellent. The Republic Thai Navy Middle East Command's HTMS Ramrachathirat. We are part of the Republic Thai Navy Third Fleet's Naval Expeditionary Group Five. "How about you, my friend?"

The C-130J-30 maintained radio silence and would continue on its journey to Rome. On board, the SEALs prepared for their jump over Vatican City as they reviewed maps and were given details of important landmarks and other locations in the city. Specifically, the SEALs had intimate details on the layout of the American Embassy in the Vatican and what the surrounding area was like. They would continue to prepare for this mission and ensure that their gear was packed and that they were ready to jump at the appropriate altitude and time.

TOP SECRET

While the C-130J-30 was flying over the Mediterranean Sea it would ascend to 35,000 feet; the 64 Navy SEALs aboard began pre-breathing 100%-oxygen through their facemasks for 45 minutes before the jump. When it was time for the SEALs to line up for the jump out of the aircraft, they would each switch over from their pre-breathers to the oxygen canister that each one was taking with them. The SEALs would be loaded with all of their gear, weapons, and parachutes as well as a reserve parachute for each. The C-130J-30's cargo door would open and the SEALs lined up to do a HAHO jump. When it was clear that each of the team leaders and their troops were ready, they would await word from the loadmaster to jump. The loadmaster waited until they were over Rome to switch the jump light from red to green in the cabin and yell for the men to jump. One by one they each did and would deploy their parachutes at the appropriate distance. All 64 jumped from the aircraft and deployed their parachutes in the appropriate manner.

Having reviewed their maps of Rome in the briefing and during the flight on the way to Europe, they would use large landmarks in the city to identify the Vatican, especially St. Peter's Basilica and the large and open Piazza San Pietro. From there, they would be able to identify where the American Embassy was. An encrypted message was sent from the Air Force to the State Department, and from the State Department to the American Embassy in Rome to confirm that the SEALs had just jumped. The Marines at the Embassy would pop blue smoke canisters on top of the American Embassy to help identify it for the SEALs.

After adjusting their course repeatedly and working together as a team, the SEALs all landed on the roof of the Embassy where a couple of Marines were waiting. As each SEAL landed, they would assist the others who were coming in for a landing to ensure that there were no accidents. After ten were on the roof, some of them would start heading down to the next lowest floor to make room. Once all of the SEALs had landed on the rooftop, the operational commander of the SEALs would hold a brief meeting with the head of the Marine embassy guards to configure a plan for the defense of the embassy. 24 SEALs perched themselves on the rooftop of the building with their rifles as they watched the various streets and paths around the building. Meanwhile, all of the windows were shuttered if they could be. Two SEALs went downstairs and found the Ambassador. They were charged with directly ensuring his protection, along with the DSS agents that were also there for the same purpose. The remaining SEALs took positions at windows throughout the building, doing their best to hide behind curtains when convenient, and waited for any kind of hostile contact to come towards the building.

Upon their approach to the Vatican, the Navy Seals could see the plum of ominous black smoke that was rising from the 3rd floor of the Apostolic Palace, as well as the three smaller plums of smoke along the Passetto at Piazza Adriana, Vicolo d'Orfeo, and Via del Mascherino. They would also hear the sustained and ongoing gunfire from Saint Anne's Gate. As they came closer and closer to the rooftop of the Palazzo San Carlo their view would be obstructed by Saint Peter's herself.

As they took up overwatch stations on the roof of the Palazzo, they had full command of the Piazza Santa Marta, the Vatican Train Station, and the Swiss Guard station at the Porta del Perugino. But little else was visible do to the ancient buildings that surrounded them.
