You could say it was born under a bad sign...
On November 13th, 1970 the then General Hafez Al-Assad seized the reigns of power from Salah Jadid and his supports in what was for all extensive purposes a military coup.
From 1970 to the Present, Assad has held Syria together by way of an iron fist ensuring the compliance of the people and the consolidation of his hold on power be it through social reforms aimed at improving the standard of living and meeting the social needs of the public or by imprisoning political opponents and subjecting them to the sadistic brutality of his security apparatus.
Today, He remains. But for how long?
Throughout Syria we see the first stirrings of something new, a grand spector, a haunting spector....the spector of Communism.
Al-Assad was the political puppet whose party served the class interests of Syria's small yet ever expanding bourgeoisie while paying lip service to the Syrian proletariat's desire for a better world. As we shall see there are some who have in store the transformation of a society, to be embraced is to invite the wrath of the lion, to be opposed is to be a fool.
