Vigilia di Capodanno
New Year's Eve

Preparations for the large new years celebration had been going on for weeks, with the logistical planning of all events, the preparation of pyrotechnics for the multiple firework shows all over the country and the large influx of tourists that came to Rome and other cities every year during the winter break.

The first festivity would be the President's New Year's speech from his residency which would be broadcast live on television. After this the Frecce Tricolore would do an aerial display over the Galoppatoio Di Villa Borghese, one of the largest parks of Rome where thousands of people would be standing in the fields to watch the display.

At noon all major television networks switched to a live video signal from one of the chambers in the President's residency, where he was sitting in a large chair by himself.

"Citizens of Italy. It is an honour to call myself your President. It has been an honour to serve you last year, and I look forward to serving you next year and the year after.

The last few months have shown us a clear path to stability, we have a strong stable government that is working hard for our national interests abroad and internally. I want to thank everyone who has been working so hard for this government.

Of course it has not all been good. Recently we witnessed one of the worst collapses of a global leading economy in that of Russia. Our ministry of finance can proudly say that, despite the hard hit of the global market, the Italian economy is still healthily going on and projections show the Italian economy will not be hit very hard in the soon future.

This year has also been the year our government has formed a lot of diplomatic ties with other countries, a development we wish to set forward into 1998 as we seek to increase Italy's diplomatic reach.

Let me finish of by wishing you all a very happy New Years Eve, and a very prosperous and safe 1998."

After this speech the national anthem played.

The feed then switched to a few camera's positioned in the Galoppatoio Di Villa Borghese where the aerial display would take place.

People that had gathered in Galoppatoio Di Villa Borghese could hear the President's speech over large speakers, and once he was done they could hear the Italian national anthem, just as on television.

After the national anthem played the speakers played a variety of instrumental music as they awaited the flyover of the Frecce Tricolori. Shortly into the first song the audience could see the formation of Aermacchi MB-339PAN jets flying towards them very high. As they approached the park they dove down and turned their smoke generators on, the entire formation flying straight towards the ground before pulling up in formation below one hundred metre above the park after flying over the entire park they turned off their smoke generators, having made a large Italian tricolour over the capital city Rome. The entire formation kept flying but the soloist pulled up to get upside down and flying away from the formation, flying over the park with his jet upside down. The rest of the formation turned around, and as the again approached the park they turned on their smoke generators and formed a new formation with the five outer jets flying away from the middle.

The aerial display went on for a few minutes, with the soloist doing a looping and some other tricks and the formation flying over in different formations, filling the air with the Italian flag.

They ended by flying over in one formation with all ten jets before returning to the airport.

As was customary in towns all over Italy, every year on New Year's Eve people would take out with the old very literally, throwing their old unwanted belongings out onto the street. Not only small items and clothes were thrown out but some people even threw large furniture items out of the window so everyone had to be careful in the small alleys of these towns.

New Year's Eve has never been something that was celebrated alone. Over the past few days it had been especially busy in the train and on the roads with families going to the rest of their family to celebrate the New Year. All these families gathered large and small hosted very large dinners where the prosecco also flowed freely.

Once everyone was done the people gathered again outside in large groups in all towns to celebrate the upcoming New Year, and to prepare their own fireworks for when midnight came. Of course a lot of people couldn't wait that long, so the entire night skies everywhere were filled with bright colours from firework.

At midnight all television networks had a large clock counting down, people were watching their watches and counted down to 1998. At midnight the sky above all cities and towns filled with colour and loud blasts as everyone set off their firework. In the large cities large firework shows started to commemorate the New Year.
