Pakse

The time was 10:45 PM in Pakse Laos and all was quiet at the Pakse Garrison including the office of the Colonel who leads this Garrison. It was humid outside there was no air conditioner and the fan in his office did very little to help. He tapped in pen on his desk as he read a piece of paper in front of him. The new government had been established, and alongside it came a new military. He and his men had come from before, and unlike those to the north, the had not bee give the chance to serve there country as he wanted to. They had not participated in the raid on China and had not taken place in the ousting of a dictator. Soon he feared that his time would come to a close and he and all the other border forces would be replaced and forgotten. He felt that his own career was on the line unless he did something to show usefulness. He had heard of the new officer corps and how they had been trained specifically for their roles, all while he had not. Leaning back in his chair he would grab his walkie-talkie, now there was no more time for thinking he had to do something here and now."This is Colonel Tống. Wake 1st Lieutenant Ngô. I want his men assembled and ready in ten minutes. I want them to go on a foot reconnaissance mission to..." he said with a pause pulling up a map."The hills above Chong Mek. I want intel on the border outpost and customs office. Tell them to take route 16w. Over" he said and then waited for a confirmation. He smiled at hearing it and sat back, it would be a long march for the troops but he figured this would save their positions as well. Show command that they were not lazy and could rough it like the old days before cars. It would be an 8 to 10-hour march for sure, but he trusted they would make it just fine.

In the barracks, a freshly awakened 1st Lieutenant Ngô would walk in with his Sergeant at his side. The Sergeant would pull out a pot and meta ladle and start clanking them together while he blew his whistle."Rise and shine! 1st Lieutenant is on deck! At attention!" the Sergeant would shout as the Soldiers either scrambled startled awake or slowly rose. Lining up the bunks they soon stood at attention."Men! The good Colonel has seen fit to allow us to improve our reputation! he has so generously given us a reconnaissance mission! I want you all dressed in ten minutes. This mission will be ten hours in and ten hours out. We are heading to the hills above Chong Mek! Understood!?" the 1st Lieutenant shouted out receiving a sir yes sir from the large platoon at his disposal. As soon as the 1st Lieutenant left with a smirk on his face the Border Troops quickly began to get dressed dawning their K07 uniforms and black combat boots. This included the officers who would be quickly in their field uniforms as well. The Border Troops quickly put on K07 pattern chest rigs while the officers in addition to that put on pistol belts with holsters. In addition to that, the 1st Lieutenant took with him a map bag with a map of the area and a road map. In the bag was also a compass to go along with the two neatly folded up maps in there. In the holsters the officers had they carried K14-VN pistols with 13 rounds of fmj plus one in the chamber. 4 of the 50 strong platoons carried RPK Machine Guns with six 40 round magazines in their chest rig, the longer magazines sticking out the top and unable to have the flaps closed over. Loaded into the RPK machine guns was a 75 round drum magazine which could not be stored on the chest rigs the troops had. Loaded into the magazine was surplus fmj ammunition but every 5 round was a tracer round. Two of the soldiers were given standard Dragunov sniper rifles with four ten round magazines each filled with fmj ammunition. As these were too large for the chest rig they replaced their chest rig with a magazine dump pouch. Two soldiers were given RPG-7V2 launchers on top of their AKMS rifles which had six thirty round magazines with fmj ammunition + one loaded into the rifle. Another two soldiers were given backpacks to hold three OG-7V warheads to be used by the RPG operators. These two were also given AKMS rifles which had six thirty round magazines with fmj ammunition + one loaded into the rifle. The remaining forty were given AKM assault rifles with six thirty round magazines with one loaded into the rifle already. Every fifth round was a tracer which would help estimate bullet drop in the event they had to shoot at a distance. Everyone except for the ones carrying the RPG or RPG warheads was given an assault pack which was loaded with two days worth of rations. Everyone carried on their load bearing rigs two full canteens while five were made to carry water refill packs and another five were made to carry rations for those five. Every two hours they would switch packs so no one had to carry the water the whole way. Two carried with the first aid kits encase of injury while everyone had strapped onto them encrypted two-way radios while one carried along range radio pack to keep in contact with the base. All officers carried binoculars and pens so the could make notes about positions upon arrival.

Once everyone was ready and lined up 1st Lieutenant Ngô would start the march having them follow in a staggered column behind him. They would follow beside route 16w the entire way and take twelve ten minute breaks along the way to allow for short rests during the march. Once at 15°08'06.6"N 105°29'26.3"E they would take one last beak before they would hike to 15°08'34.7"N 105°28'45.2"E. Once there it was planned for them to set up camp and observe the Thai city bellow, but that would be in eight hours.

After a long march through the night with multiple breaks, the Platoon of 50 would arrive in the area of 15°08'34.7"N 105°28'45.2"E. It was 8:45 Am in the morning and still humid like the night before. It was a cloudy and windy day with 4 mph winds brushing the tree limbs around them. 1st Lieutenant Ngô would look at his map while taking out a compass, the border here was unmarked which suited him just fine. Pointing he would start giving orders as he wanted five infantry sections of ten men to form and secure their perimeter. He wanted a section at 15°08'34.7"N 105°28'45.7"E which would cover the southeast approach, and a section at 15.143423, 105.479562 covering the northeast approach. However as he was ordering the positions of his troops he realized he would not have enough room to form an effective perimeter, and his current position did not give him a good overlook. There was a tree in the way! But... a little to the northwest he saw a potentially good spot. he doubted anyone would mind as he would move to 15°08'36.1"N 105°28'45.2"E crossing the border. He would then order a section to 15°08'35.8"N 105°28'43.3"E to cover the southwest approach, and then order a section to 15°08'38.7"N 105°28'45.1"E in order to cover the northwest approach. The sections would be in a wedge formation with firepower concentrated towards the front. Their spacing would be 15 meters in order to avoid the entire section being taken out by a single standard grenade. Two RPK Gunners, one Dragunov sniper, and one RPG team would be in the 15°08'35.8"N 105°28'43.3"E section while the others with such equipment would be placed at 15°08'38.7"N 105°28'45.1"E. The RPK gunners would set up overlapping fields of fire at opposite ends of the formation. 1st Lieutenant Ngô would take his binoculars and look down into Chong Mek to begin making observations.

editorial-footage-of-thai-farmer-working-in-green-rice-farm-september-2015-loei-province-thailand_es00mpzcg__S0000.jpg

It was the early morning, Chon Sasiprapa and his family were beginning to farm their lands which they do on a daily basis. In the distance Chon noticed the two large groups of troops although it was unknown to the farmer who the group(s) belong too either the neighbouring Socialist Republic of Vietnam or their own nations border patrol forces which was quite strange as usually the Royal Thai Police Boarder Patrol Division usually lets the community know when they are patrolling within the area although it wasn't strange to see local forces patrolling the borders. Chon headed back to the house to make a phone call about the suspected sightings and ushered the rest of his family to keep working but not approach the two large forces until he knew who they were and what they were doing.

Chon rushed home which only took 5 minutes as he ran quite fast like his life depended on it. When entering his house, Chon gripped to his house phone dialling 191 which was the emergency service number for the police. A local operator answered the call taking all information given by Chon before assuring Chon that units would respond and take a look into the matter. Chon sighed before heading back to the family to continuing working as he needed the money to be able to support his family. The operator on the phone, contacted the local police station which was located within Chong Mek.

Police Officers in Chong Mek although dealt with dealing in the area quite a bit, believed it would be best that the Border Patrol Division located in Kut Chomphu would be best suited for dealing with the current situation as the area reported was quite close to the Laos boarder. Within the court yard of the garrison, 15 armed officers from the 226 Division all equipped with M16 Rifles, SIG Sauer P320SP, cuffs and radios. A further 5 armed officers equipped with a mixture of M4 Carbines and Heckler & Koch MP5s, SIG Sauer P320SP, cuffs and radios would be waiting a Royal Thai Police Eurocopter EC155 which was to be sent ahead of the convoy to scout the area to see what the reported sighting were. The first group of 15 officers boarded 3 Toyota Hilux marked with "Border Patrol Division".

The Helicopter would be on scene within a short 10 minute flight time however it would take the convoy at least 51 minutes to arrive, until then the officers located within the Eurocopter was to observe and pass on any information needed to convoy enroute. With the helicopter circling above the last reported position of the large groups of armed men, Chon would be able to notice the helicopter in the area looking up then looking to the large group before continuing his work being relieved that his phone call to the police wasn't taken as a joke. The Helicopter would remain on scene for roughly 45 minutes and staying in Thailand Airspace before landing near Chons house to unload the 5 armed officers before heading back to base to refuel and await further orders, the 5 armed officers would board the 3 pick up trucks once the convoy arrives near the house.

The first thing the Vietnamese soldiers would hear was the sound of the helicopter, far before they would see it. 1st Lieutenant Ngô looked from his binoculars and would start to scan the sky around them. Then soon enough he saw it, approaching fast at a distance and he would quickly start to signal to his men who could view him. What he signaled to them was to find cover relative to their position, and then he grabbed his encrypted radio."This is 1st Lieutenant Ngô, we have a chopper comming. Could be civilian, could be military. Doesn't matter, I want you to obscure yourselves from the air." he would say ordering them to find some cover as he directed his attention towards the helicopter. From their positions where applicable soldiers would put themselves under trees and other applicable vegetation. If that wasn't available near them then shadows were a good bet as it was better then nothing.

Pulling up his binoculars it took a second to get a bead on the helicopter but he saw it, that distinct markings of the Border Patrol."Update, it is a border patrol heli. Keep on your toes." he would say into the radio as he tracked it to the point in which he did not require binoculars. It was searching for them all right, and while it could not likely see everyone it could certainly see a few. As that became obvious after it finished circling above on the Thai side of the border. Then he watched as it would go and set down in the town below. Of course, there were some obstructions, but he had little doubt that they were sending foot mobiles."Heads up, likely foot mobiles coming to investigate us." he added to inform his men as they would get into their previous positions upon being ordered to.

It had been some time since that helicopter had landed 1st Lieutenant Ngô would think to himself. Maybe they were approaching with caution? With the intend to get into position and open fire? A multitude of thoughts ran through his mind on what they could be planing. But then, a new thought came to mind as he recalled he had not informed his men they were crossing the border even a little. He had been the one navigating them through this, and thus an idea came to mind. Quickly he would signal the long range radio man over so he could get HQ on the line."HQ this is 1st Lieutenant Ngô. Do you copy?" he asked over the encrypted line a devious thought that he knew would be brilliant for his career."This is HQ." a static like voice replied."While performing reconnaissance at the border my platoon was confronted by a helicopter. The helicopter proceeded to circle in and out of our airspace to observe the platoon. We believe they have dispatched foot mobiles to confront us." he said lying to HQ who of course did not have eyes on the situation and did not have a perfect link to radar assets at this time."Copy that, keep us informed." the voice returned. Perfect 1st Lieutenant Ngô thought to himself as he finished on the radio.

By now the Helicopter would have returned to its base however still on high alert if needed to return. The Troops which exited the Helicopter would now have linked up with the convoy, with all troops exiting the vehicles. The troops begun to get into a line formation, allowing the troops to have extended their line of view. Seeing as the Border Force knew where the border was and knew that there was no local patrols in the area they would be suspicious and always checking their sectors.

The armed officers would make their way to the family, making contact with the caller before telling them to return to their house in case of any danger while they deal with the ongoing situation. With the officers from the helicopter spotting some of the troops, a warning would be shouted "This is the Thai Border Division. Come out of hiding and hand yourself in! This is the Thai Border Division. Come out of hiding and hand yourself in!" with this being said, the officers made for cover prepared for anything that was to hit them. With the border being so close, the Chief Officer would make contact with headquarters, making sure the Ministry knew and that the Army and Airforce was placed on stand-by in case of emergency.

Just as the Thai Border Division Troops would be able to spot the Vietnam Border Defence Force troops they would be able to spot them much the same, especially from a shouting distance. More than likely spotting them on approach to their position this would be reported back to the 1st Lieutenant over secured radio. The sniper in the section being confronted by the Thai Border Troops would from his position start scanning for their officer. The RPK gunners began to communicate with their neighbors to figure out Thai positions. The RPG gunner and loader got ready to load a frag round as the tension rose in the humid air. The 1st Lieutenant would ask the section over radio how many and what did they want exactly. He was informed there appeared to be around 15 or so and that they were taking cover. Apparently, they wanted to come out and surrender to which the 1st Lieutenant laughed and told the Corporal to tell them to surrender, that they were to come out with hands raised or be fired upon. He said overconfidently as he awaited the response. "No thanks! You are outnumbered, drop your weapons and approach with hands up! Or be fired upon!" the Corporal shouted from behind a tree. The RPG gunner finished having the warhead loaded in as this exchange happened while the riflemen all lined up shots as best they could. They were not backing down and awaited the signal or for the first sign of trouble.

With the Border Forces Officers taking cover, the lead officer would shout out knowing the access from either the Laos or Vietnamese soldier "You have trespassed onto Thai territory" pausing scanning the area for the rest of the Vietnamese troops "You have us outnumbered? You must be kidding! You are in Thailand, you are the one who is outnumbered!" within moments the lead officer would issue for the radio operator to send a warning to headquarters to mobilise the military to help out in case this turns into a full blown war.

A Border Force Officer would quickly ran for another piece of cover, having his weapon ready to be fired at a moments notice. "Drop your weapons and come out with your hands up" was shouted once again. With the radio operator finally making contact with headquarters, orders were being issued within the 6th Infantry Division Headquarters. 15 M35 Trucks began parking within the courtyard of the military base, a total of 150 armed soldiers all equipped with IWI Tavor TAR-21 Assault Rifle, FN 5-Seven Pistol and Grenades begun boarding the awaiting trucks, 10 soldiers per truck. The orders were for the trucks to drive to the scene of the commotion and take over if the Border Force personnel haven't dealt with it by the time they arrived. The drive would take a total of 2 hours before they would unload their troops at the house while at the Royal Thai Airforce Base Ubon, 4 F-5T Tiger fully armed and fully fuelled would be waiting on the tarmac waiting for clearance in case they were needed to deploy.

At the refusal of the Border Forces Officers to comply with their demand the Corporal shouted."Giết người Thái!" to his comrades as the Border Force Officer was running between pieces of cover."Đây là chó cái Lào!" rang out as they proceeded to them open fire upon the officers. The two RPK gunners from their positions started a sweeping suppressing fire as the troops in the section with AKM assault rifles opened up on their targets firing in bursts. Then as this all went down the RPG gunner fired his fragmentation rocket at the center of the Thai group. Then he would get down after firing as his loader would help him get another warhead into the tube. The 1st Lieutenant was stunned at the sound of gunfire and grasped for what to do. His Sergeant quickly asked for orders giving him a nudge."Take our reserve section and flank the Thai Border troops! Now! I am going to call for backup." he said as he would quickly get on the long-range radio keeping down as he did so. The Sergeant took the fifth section that was on standby and rounded them up into a wedge formation with 15-meter spacing between each of them. Using their two-way radios he would coordinate with the Corporal to start flanking the Thai border troops from the west.

"This is 1st Lieutenant Ngô! We have engaged Thai forces! They have crossed the border, we are taking fire! Requesting backup and orders!" 1st Lieutenant Ngô would say into the encrypted long-range radio fibbing as he did so. Colonel Tống received the news early and was quick to start putting on his field uniform. He put the Garrison on high alert, this was not a drill, and his effort had seemingly caused an incident. He had to get this under control, and quickly or else it would be his job! Over encrypted SIN comms, he put in an immediate request for air support to the fifty strong platoons and explained the situation. High command was sufficiently surprised but immediately went on high alert, the gears of the military have not seen a proper engagement in years began to turn. There was skepticism, of course, maybe they had just run into some drug runners wearing military surplus? Regardless, apparently, it was serious enough to warrant support. The services of the 931st Fighter Yen Bai Squadron and 947th Ground-Attack Squadron were called upon to assist the engaged ground unit as well as to get a visual on the situation.

Võ Hữu Tân a Fighter Pilot was called up immediately along with one other pilot from the 31st Fighter Yen Bai Squadron and were quickly briefed on their mission. They were to escort and support two IA-58D Pucara from the 947th Ground-Attack Squadron flying from Pleiku. Not only that but they were instructed to be on the lookout for unidentified helicopters in Vietnamese airspace. With all that in mind, they were given their rendezvous point and sent to go get geared up. Rushing off the two of them would quickly put on their Su-35 flight suits while the ground crew wheeled out two Su-35S Super-Flankers from their hanger with 10 yards between each of them. Putting blocks at the wheels they would start to fuel all the aircraft and mount weapons. They were armed with 6 × R-73E and 6 x R-77M missiles while their 1 × internal 30 mm Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-30-1 autocannon was loaded with 150 rounds. Meanwhile, at Pleiku, four pilots began putting on their flight suits as two IA-58D Pucara would be wheeled out and have blocks put on their wheels. The ground crew there would begin to fuel the two aircraft as well as arm them. Two LAU-3/A launchers were fixed to the wing pylons of each of the aircraft and loaded with 19 HE warhead rockets with Point Detonating fuses. The rest of their armaments consisted of fully loaded 2 × 20 mm Hispano-Suiza HS.804 autocannons and 4 × 7.62 mm FN-Browning machine guns. Once fueled and armed the two pilots would board their SU-35S Super Flankers and close the canopy above them doing once last systems check before they were given the green light, the four Pucara pilots doing the same.

One at a time the aircraft would taxi to the runway and then take off safely before circling above the airport at a parking orbit as they waited for the other aircraft to do the same. The two IA-58D Pucara would at an altitude of 6,000 ft above the ground form a two-ship wedge with 4000 ft between them at a thirty-degree angle. They would obtain their cruise speed of 257 mph and proceed along within grid square OK to 15.138866, 105.474552. Meanwhile, the two Su-35 Super Flankers would also form a two-ship wedge with 4000 ft between them at a thirty-degree angle. This being at an altitude of 27,887 ft at a cruise speed of 838 mph. Moving within grid square OK they would also travel to 15.138866, 105.474552 however as they would arrive first they would stay within Vietnamese airspace and circle around at a relaxed turn radius. Their radars would peer into Thai airspace both from the front and then side look radars as they passed near the airspace each time.

Meanwhile, as this was all going on the Pakse Garrison would mobilize a further two fifty man platoons with the exact same composition as the first one. Quickly they would put on their uniforms and boots the exact same type as the first fifty man platoon that had been sent. The Border Troops quickly put on K07 pattern chest rigs while the officers in addition to that put on pistol belts with holsters. In addition to that, the two officers in charge of the two fifty man platoons took with them a map bag with a map of the area and a road map. These two were also given AKMS rifles which had six thirty round magazines with fmj ammunition + one loaded into the rifle. The remaining forty were given AKM assault rifles with six thirty round magazines with one loaded into the rifle already. Everyone except for the ones carrying the RPG or RPG warheads was given an assault pack which was loaded with two days worth of rations. Two carried with the first aid kits encase of injury while everyone had strapped onto them encrypted two-way radios while one carried along range radio pack to keep in contact with the base. Four mortar teams of three would be picked out two from each fifty man platoon and they would carry with them 4 x 82-BM-41 with eight HE mortars each carried in backpacks. Forming a column with 15 meters between each man they would set out at a march down and beside route 16w. Taking enough resting breaks just like the first platoon that had been deployed. It would take at least eight hours for them to arrive at the scene to reinforce the border.

With the Vietnamese Soldiers beginning to open fire, the RPG would smash into two of the Officers in cover not killing them but severely injuring them. "OFFICERS DOWN, OFFICERS DOWN" was shouted into the radio, the loud explosion and the bullets of the Vietnamese could be heard from a few miles away. With the Army 150 Troops now arriving and quickly jumping out of the trucks safely, before running they'd make sure their rifles were ready to fire.

The Border Division Officers begun returning fire, moving between covers and still firing back hoping they would hit a few of the Vietnamese soldiers? The Army Troops begun sprinting towards the scene moving in different ways, a group of 40 Soldiers would notice the Vietnamese the flanking forces, and begun opening fire and suppressing them before they even got into cover. The F-5's sitting on the runway was given the clearance to take off and head towards the scene on the border, keeping away from the Vietnamese Border and Air Space, they would circle above waiting for the word to open fire on the Vietnamese down below. Back at the Airbase, 10 more F-5s were prepped and being ready to takeoff to be able to swap with the current F-5s in the air, once the F-5s in the air hit bingo fuel, they would head back to base and land and refuel and rearm if needed.

"Oh shit..." 1st Lieutenant Ngô said quietly to himself as he watched the convoy of trucks in the town below. There had to be at least a hundred of them, and that was totally not good. Lowering his binoculars he would get to his long-range radio man, the firefight intensifying a hundred fold as he ducked down to avoid stray fire."Pakse Garrison this is 1st Lieutenant Ngô! We are under heavy assault! I repeat under heavy assault! They brought in motorized troops! I am requesting immediate air support and reinforcements!" he said nearly shouting as the sound of gunfire intensified. He waited a moment and then got his response, he was told to dig in and report approximate enemy locations. Adrenalin rushing he took out his map, cursing that he had not brought signaling grenades. He listed off two grid coordinates, the troops in front of them which were dangerously close, and the location of the trucks that had offloaded the troops. He was then told to standby and await further orders.

The Vietnamese section that had initiated the engagement would take a few hits from the return fire as one rifleman took a hit to the right shoulder just missing the brachial artery while another was his in the torso the round striking through their chest rig. In pain, they would crawl behind solid cover such as the tree trunks they were surrounded by the hilltop and called for medical attention. The RPG gunner finished loading another drag round and awaited return fire from their RPK gunners to fire. At hearing the crack of fire they got up and would fire into the area of the freshly arrived Thai troops before getting back down. The riflemen outnumbered were diminished in their ability to return fire while the snipers would pop off a shot or two. Meanwhile, the northwest section would change orientation to face the incoming Thai reinforcements. They would fire into the distance making note of where their allies were based on grid locations. Bullets cracked through the air and tracers streaked in the void between combatants. Spraying RPK fire and lobbing an RPG frag warhead into the advancing Thai troops. The section at the southeast approach would move to 15°08'34.3"N 105°28'42.7"E and use the incline as cover. Once in place, they would coordinate fire at the Thai troops. The North East Section would move to 15°08'36.9"N 105°28'45.2"E and also use the incline as cover as they began to stream forward fire at the Thai troops. Both groups when moving would keep low and keep to cover both solid and not solid. The flanking group immediately took three causalities as they were forced down and took cover.

With all this happening the two Su-35S Super-Flankers had detected the F-5s approach on a head-on course at a range of 140 km. Via encrypted comms, they communicated this back to headquarters and requested further instruction. With the situation on the ground worsening and the two IA-58D Pucara about to arrive as ground support, there were only two options. The orders came back, shoot down the aircraft."Can do." Pilot Tân said as he would initiate feed targeting data from his radar into two R-77 missiles. One missile for the lead aircraft, and the second missile for the trailing aircraft. The other Su-35 did much the same and fed radar tracking information on the two aircraft between the lead and trailing aircraft. Then at 90km, the two Su-35 aircraft launched the four R-77 missiles which went to inertial guidance autopilot, the occasional data link updating information. This meant that they could not fire and forget and had to keep their passive trackers on the aircraft or make their time facing away from them brief. Then as the four missiles came within 20 km they would initiate active radar mode, locking directly onto their assigned aircraft. Streaking directly at the group of four F-5s they had very little warning time as their active radar lock warnings would come online. The host radars of the Su-35s kept data encase they managed to break lock so that the missiles could find their way back to their targets. As this was going on the two IA-58D Pucara would arrive over the battlefield having been fed enemy locations, which still wouldn't be easy as the troop's bellow did not have signal smokes up. Also, they would not be able to have a direct shot at the Thai as they were on the opposite side of the hills on their approach, so that left one clear target for them to take out. They would clog up the roads. Coming in for an attack run they would fire 8 rockets from each of their two LAU-3/A launchers down into the convoy which had transported the 150 troops. With staggered fire, the rockets slammed into the road, roadside, and trucks parked their explosions all along in pitting the ground and exploding as well as damaging trucks. Debris covered the road, oil spilled out caught aflame, and the majority of the troops brought here would now be without their truck transports. Finishing their attack run they would start to come back around for an attack run on the hills above the town. The Vietnamese were on the crest and top of the hill for the most part, and they could see some movement heading up the hill in a rather concentrated fashion. So they would line up an area of effect and unleash 11 rockets from each pod firing at the area where the Thai troops were. Rockets impacted the ground and exploded kicking up dirt, battering trees, ripping away foliage, and flinging bodies. Pulling up they passed over the hill and prepared for another attack run.

The 100 Vietnamese Border Troops would arrive placing their 4 x 82-BM-41 mortars at 15.135272, 105.490797 in squad formation with 15 meters between each of them. They pooled their ammunition into the middle of the formation as they set up the mortars. Three troops assigned to each of them as they would await target information as they did not have much to go off of. One platoon would take up a platoon level wedge formation with 15 meters between each soldier in each wedge. The wedges were composed of 10 main sections. A lead section, right flank section, left the flank section, command section, and rear flank section. This platoon would move in to reinforce the outnumbered troops on the hills to prevent them from breaking under fire. Marching up the hill which was between them and the enemy they still took precautions. They made sure to watch the crest of the hills and kept tabs on areas of cover as they went up. Once up there the command section would go to 1st Lieutenant Ngô at 15°08'36.1"N 105°28'45.2"E and take up cover firing down into the Thai troops. RPK Gunners offering suppression fire while snipers picked and chose their targets. The RPG gunners offering direct support as they launched frag rounds. The right flank section would move to 15.143423, 105.479562 to back up the northwest troops joining them but also keeping their spacing. Then the left flank section went to 15°08'35.8"N 105°28'43.3"E to backup the southwest troops and reinforce their position offering more forward firepower. The rear flank section would move to relieve the currently pinned down flanking section. They all opened fire on the enemy and raced to cover, and got into position. Meanwhile, the other platoon also taking up a platoon level wedge formation would move to Chong Mek Customs and start to make a wide flank around the enemy wanting to cut off their retreat and open fire on them from the rear. The command section would set up an enemy facing wedge at 15.137646, 105.468597, the right flank section would set up at 15.136625, 105.468555 and the left flank section would set up at 15.138204, 105.468637 while the rear flank section would set up at 15.137975, 105.467417. They would race between cover to get to these locations and would use trees and dips in the terrain to dig in as they would open fire on the flank of the Thai troops. However, if they ran into the Thai troops on the way to these locations they would instead pin them down there. Digging in at the point of contact if they encountered them in route opening fire with all means necessary. With eyes on targets, the reinforcing platoon on the crest of the hill would call in for a ranging mortar. Feeding them a Thai squad location a single mortar would make the calculations and make a ranging shot sending a mortar over the hill and possibly into a Thai position. If incorrect he would feed them adjustments based on the landing area of the first mortar and then they would fire once more. This would repeat until they had good effect.

Meanwhile, it was fairly obvious this was escalating more and more as time went on, this was apparent to command. Lieutenant general Phan Hữu Bảo the man in charge of the newly formed 11th Corps had been made aware of the situation on the Laos Thai border. He saw an opportunity, he viewed Vietnam as starting to stagnate under the weight of reforms, and unless it grew then it would remain that way. In past Vietnam had nearly an unlimited budget, and across the border was a wealth of potential comrades in arms. All he had to do was escalate this clash at the border into a full-on border conflict. There was a risk, just as in all things and it would cost the lives of good men. But this was for Vietnam, and based on what he had heard, the Thai had started the shooting anyways. It was the perfect excuse to press the border dispute of Laos, in which Laos and Thailand had fought a war over in the past. He needed to test the Thai reaction speed as well as support the current engagement at the border. He would deploy the 65th Artillery Brigade, 112th Tank Brigade, 252nd Tank Brigade, and 420th Engineers Brigade. At this time they did not have access to their Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, so the tankers for which would be left behind at the base. The 65th Artillery Brigade would fuel, arm, and crew their 292 Huemul Trooper, 12 TAM VCA 155, 6 TAM VCCDT, and 8 TAM VCLC to max capacity. The self-propelled artillery would be loaded with general purpose shells and the ammo carrier vehicles would also carry spare general purpose shells. The TAM VCLCs would be loaded with HE point detonation rockets. All of this would be done to max capacity. The two tank brigades would fully fuel, arm, and load their Vinaxuki Armored Pickup 650Xs, TAM 2IPs, Leopard 1 Biber Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridges and T-72B3Ms to max capacity. The TAM 2IPs would be given 20 APFSDS-T rounds, 10 Canister, and 10 HEAT-T rounds while the T-72B3Ms would be given 20 APFSDS-T rounds, 10 Canister Rounds, and 10 HEAT-T rounds. Machine guns mounted on vehicles would be loaded to max capacity with FMJ ammunition with every 5th bullet being a tracer. For the 420th Engineers Brigade their Leopard 1 Biber Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridges, Bergepanzer 2s, and Vinaxuki Armored Pickup 650Xs would be fully fueled, armed, and loaded with machine guns being loaded with FMJ ammo with every 5th round being a tracer. Everyone would embark onto their designated vehicles and form a column with fifteen meters between each vehicle. Their order would be 112th Tank Brigade, 420th Engineers Brigade, 252nd Tank Brigade, and 65th Artillery Brigade. They would depart Luang Prabang International Airport heading down route 1 before getting off onto Laos route 4. Their trip would be 181 miles and their destination was Ban Na Kra Seng Border. Supporting them was the 46th Infantry Division which would deploy the 46F Anti-Air Battalion, 46G Assault Gun Battalion, 46H Combat Engineer Battalion, 46I Signal Battalion, 46J Medical Battalion, and 46K Transport Battalion. Vehicles would be fully fueled, armed, and loaded with operators and troops. 50 Huemul Cargo A would be used to max capacity to transport vehicle fuel, while the other 50 would transport basic supplies including rations and water. The 10 Isuzu Heavy Duty EX would carry additional ammunition at max capacity should ammo run dry. They would form a column in the order of 46H Combat Engineer Battalion, 46F Anti-Air Battalion, 46G Assault Gun Battalion, 46I Signal Battalion, 46J Medical Battalion, and 46K Transport Battalion. They would follow behind the first column with the same spacing and also would follow the same route going 181 miles. They scheduled refuel sessions for when tanks would start to run low on fuel. All the while the Anti-Air Battalion remained active and monitored the skies. Motorized Infantry would be equipped with K07 PASGT Helmets, K07 Uniforms and Boots, K07 Chestrigs, Assault Packs, and Web gear. Each was equipped with an encrypted two way radio, 2 x RGD-5 fragmentation grenades, 2 x red target smoke grenades, 6 x 30 round ACE 32 magazines, 1 x ACE 32 Assault Rifle + 1 preloaded 30 round magazine, 2 x standard water canteens, 2 days of rations, assault pack, compass, and bandages for basic first aid. Officers above the rank of corporal would be given the same except for the addition of a K14-VN pistol with 3 13 round magazines, a map bag with a geographic grid map, and binoculars. Squads consisted of 25 men with one Sergeant and one Corporal with the Sergeant reporting to 1st Lieutenants who commanded Platoons of fifty men. 4 of the 50 soldiers in these platoons carried RPK Machine Guns with six 40 round magazines in their chest rig, the longer magazines sticking out the top and unable to have the flaps closed over. Two soldiers were given RPG-7V2 launchers on top of their ACE 31 rifles which had six thirty round magazines with fmj ammunition + one loaded into the rifle. Another two soldiers were given backpacks to hold two OG-7V and one PG-7VR warhead to be used by the RPG operators. These two were also given AKMS rifles which had six thirty round magazines with fmj ammunition + one loaded into the rifle. The remaining forty were given ACE 32 assault rifles with six thirty round magazines with one loaded into the rifle already. Every fifth round was a tracer which would help estimate bullet drop in the event they had to shoot at a distance. Everyone except for the ones carrying the RPG or RPG warheads was given an assault pack. Ammunition was other then what already mentioned standard FMJ surplus.

Meanwhile, at the same time, the 18th Air Defence Division across 4 airbases would come online. 18A SA Artillery Regiment would man and arm their 1 Argentine Primary 3D Radar and 1 S-300PMU-2 long range sam system. 18B SA Missile Regiment, 18C SA Missile Regiment, 18D SA Missile Regiment, and 18E SA Missile Regiment would arm and operate their own S-300PMU-2 long range sam systems and single Bavar 373. The 931st Fighter Yen Bai Squadron would wheel out a further six Su-35S 'Super-Flanker' with 10 yards between each of them. Ground crews would begin to arm and fuel them while each of their pilots would suit up. They were put on standby as they were armed with 6 × R-73E and 6 x R-77M missiles while their 1 × internal 30 mm Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-30-1 autocannon was loaded with 150 rounds.

The Border Defence Force Troops now reinforced on top of the hill held against the advancing Thai troops, the once outnumbered Border Troops were now on a more even footing. More than that they did make a counter push as the Thai had come at them. In their defended position above the Thai, they held there raining fire down upon the Thai troops. Tracers ripped through the air, RPG rockets detonated and exploded among groups of Thai soldiers, and the peace that these hills once knew was at this moment shattered. However not only was the fifty man platoon reinforcement to the hilltop successful, but the second fifty man platoon of Border Defense Force troops had successfully moved into a flanking position and dug in. The Thai were sandwiched from two sides now as they had climbed the hill. The flanking platoon held firm as they opened fire into the flank of the motorized Thai unit which now took causalities from both sides. But with this, the Vietnamese troops had to be careful of cross fire and friendly fire as they fired both up and down the hill. The Thai were pinned in place of course, but the fight was far from over. At this point, the ranging mortar shot had hit an area with Thai troops. This was confirmed over the radio and thus the creeping mortar barrage began. They would launch mortars until they ran out. So a total of 32 mortars would be fire into the Thai position on the hill side.

The two Su-35S Super-Flankers waited and watched as they stuck to their airspace peering deep into the Thai airspace where they had launched their R-77M missiles. Then, one by one as the missiles got close and activated their active radar mode locking onto the F-5s the targeted aircraft would of course move to take evasive maneuvers. But for them it was too late, as they had far to little warning time as they had been making a b line for the airspace above the battlefield. The missiles found their targets and destroyed them with explosive effect. Whether the Pilots ejected or not the Su-35S Super Flanker pilots could not tell, but they knew their missiles had made contact. Their radars tracked as the wrecks of the aircraft began to fall out of the sky or disappear entirely."Thai aircraft down, repeat, Thai aircraft down. We got them." Pilot Tân said over the encrypted line back to HQ. They were then told to hold over position and defend the area from approaching Thai aircraft. This was to be a no-fly zone for the Thai, and they would not be allowed to interfere with the ground battle below. Meanwhile the rocket attacks of the two IA-58D Pucara had made their mark both destroying a vast swath of the Thai transport trucks and clogging the road which would both impede reinforcements and escape. Then the rocket attack on the Thai troops on the hill had also made their mark, majorly disrupting the Thai advance and scattering a couple of large groups. Their assault would be very much hindered by the rocket attack from the two IA-58D Pucara. The two of which now came back around for another attack run coming up in the air and then coming back down. Aiming down the side of the hill they would fire a barrage of 19 rockets each into the attacking Thai troops. Rockets slamming into the hillside, trees, and folliage exploding on contact kicking up dirt and debris. The two aircraft would then pull up away from the ground an start getting ready for another run on the force of Thai troops on the hill.

With the Thai advance disrupted, damaged, halted, and encircled from two sides it was decided that the situation should be taken advantage of. A counter attack was called for and ordered which would be composed of all three of the platoons. The signal sent out the two hill top platoons minus command sections would come out from their cover and begin to advance on the Thai troops. Opening fire, ducking, and weaving between each of cover they would come upon the Thai opening fire. They wanted to put the squeeze on them and try to over run them. Send them into the field of fire of the platoon at the bottom of the hill or destroy their organization completely. The fight was up close and even closer now that the Vietnamese tried to move forward. The massive ammount of firepower leveled at the Thai before had helped them become un-suppressed. So they tried to take advantage of this as much as possible with both walking and running fire between each piece of cover they could find. The platoon at the bottom of the hill kept the pressure on and wouldn't allow the Thai a simple retreat.

Posting as Thailand.

As the conflict continued to escalate, it did not take very long for news of it to make it back to Bangkok. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had called an emergency meeting of her Deputy-Prime Ministers all of who made up the cabinet. As the former Minister of Defense and by having the experience of operating in the Thai government which operated with the blessing of a military junta, she was well-versed in the operations of the military and the armed forces. Despite Thailand's military capabilities and reasonably impressive armed forces, she was also aware of Vietnam's military prowess and their propensity to absorb neighboring sovereign nations. From the reports given to her and the deputies from the front, she and her cabinet came to the conclusion that this conflict was the result of one of three things: first, it could be the beginning of Vietnamese invasion of Thailand; secondly, it could be a false-flag operation designed to bring the two countries to war; or thirdly, it was a cataclysmic misunderstanding and both sides were somehow at fault.

She decided to call a five minute break and took a within the Government House to clear her mind. Yingluck knew that the military was ambitious and would seize any opportunity it could take to gain more power and more control of South East Asia, but even they would know that Vietnam and it's client-states heavily outgunned Thailand. In her own experience in the military, she knew that Thai troops would never dare cross the border into Vietnam. If they did, they would be just as likely to be shot when they returned to Thailand as they would be if they stayed in foreign territory. The only conclusion she could draw was that Vietnam - either as a whole, or a handful of greedy conspirators - was trying to start a war, or this was a massive accident that someone would certainly be executed for later. Regardless, things would only continue to get worse as the fighting went on. The fighting needed to stop.

Yingluck returned to the cabinet meeting and informed her deputies that they needed to contact the Vietnamese government at once. A message was sent to the Privy Council so that they, along with the King and the junta, would be up to date as to what they were doing. She wasn't exactly sure how they would react - that's how dealing with the junta went - but if she had to guess, they wanted a war with Vietnam just as much as she did. She initiated an encrypted call with President Pham Xuan Do while Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul listened in. If asked by someone else what the nature of the call was, she would say that it was in regard to the current conflict on the border. She patiently waited to speak to the President.

President Pham Xuan Do and General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng were currently in the office of the President discussing the current affairs at the border. That is when a call was put through to the SIN encrypted phone at the Presidents desk. It was a surprise, as they had heard nothing from Thailand since the start of the current border engagement. They had been going off of assumptions and educated guesses the entire time. To them it was apparent the Thai had started this border skirmish, as no one had ordered or planned such an attack on their end. At least, not to their knowledge and with the restructuring of the military that seemed entirely unlikely. Picking up the phone he paused for a moment before speaking up."This is President Do speaking." he said introducing himself to whomever was on the other side of the phone. This call would confirm what the Thai wanted out of this, and put it entirely on the record.

The Skirmish at the border drew to a close as the encircled and disrupted Thai troops had nowhere to run and refused to surrender. The Platoon at the bottom of the hill took care of stragglers as they attempted to retreat towards what remained of the transports that took them here. The sound of gunfire started to die down as the Vietnamese advance would come to an end. Their push forward leading them towards the bottom of the hill, they had swept completely down it. The Three Vietnamese Border Platoons had won the skirmish with support from the air and the mortar team. Now all that was left was to count the dead, and help the wounded while securing their position against further attack. The Platoon that had maneuvered to encircle at the bottom of the hill would pick up and move in a staggered column to the Chongmek Bus Terminal. Taking the building they would set up defensively across the road and in the building. Keeping their spacing the same in doing this as the other two platoons would scour the hillside. Moving in patrols up and down the hill in order to find bodies and the wounded strewn about it. Bodies would be taken to the bottom of the hill and separated based on whether they were Thai or Vietnamese troops. Their identification would be taken and recorded as causalities. Wounded would be taken to the Bus Terminal and be given immediate medical attention. Whether they were Thai or Vietnamese did not matter as they would get medical treatment regardless. The first platoon to arrive suffered 14 killed in action and 8 wounded. The second platoon suffered 8 killed in action and 7 wounded in action. The third platoon received 1 killed in action and 5 wounded in action. With no further need for air support at this time the two Su-35S Super-Flankers and two IA-58D Pucara would return to their respective bases. Once arrived they would safely land and then taxi to their hangers where they would park and have the pilots exit the aircraft. Ground crews would then go about checking the aircraft for damage and perform immediate maintenance.

Meanwhile, the 46th Infantry Division, 65th Artillery Brigade, 112th Tank Brigade, 252nd Tank Brigade, and 420th Engineers Brigade would meet no resistance upon arriving at their destination. The armored column would cross the bridge at Ban Na Kra Seng Border without incident and move to take the town proper. The 112A Armored Battalion would dismount their Vinaxuki Armored Pickup 650X at Ban Na Kra Seng Border Check Point and then enter the building. Occupying it and the surrounding building in the checkpoint complex. After it was secured the 112A Armored Battalion would spread out through the area and set up a defensive perimeter. The town would be occupied by the 46th Infantry Division, 112th Tank Brigade and 252nd Tank Brigade entirely as a perimeter were set up around it. However, the 112C Armored Battalion, 112BB Heavy Tank Company, 252C Armored Battalion, and 252BB Heavy Tank Company would be held in reserve at the checkpoint to be deployed to reinforce areas under attack. With that in mind the 420th Engineers Brigade would with the assistance of 46H Combat Engineer Battalion, 112AB Combat Engineer Company, and 252AB Combat Engineer Company would start to dig a series of defenses in the form of trenches. Dug ins for the trenches included spaces for vehicles such as the armored pickups or tanks to drive into so that they may go hull down. The 65th Artillery Brigade would set up at the Vietnamese side of the border supported by the 46F Anti-Air Battalion which split its forces between the artillery and the center of the defenses. The Ban Na Kra Seng Border town had fallen without a single shot being fired and was now in the process of being fortified and was holding the position for further orders. The 46I Signal Battalion would over an encrypted and private link inform HQ of this and tell them that they await further orders. With that Vietnam now had two footholds into Thailand it would seem. However, perhaps this exercise would all be for nothing?

This was not the case however, as Thailand had not made a forward response the worst was being feared. Thus the two most well equipped Corps Vietnam had to offer were activated and put on red alert. The Commanding Officers of the 1st Corps - Binh đoàn Quyết thắng and 2nd Corps - "Binh đoàn Hương Giang" were told that they were to prepare an invasion into Thailand. The 1st Corps would go in through Thailand and the 2nd Corps would go in through Cambodia. They were however told to expect to be attacked first and that this measure is to only happen should the Thai continue to refuse diplomatic action. With those orders in mind, the 1st and 2nd Corps began to make preparations for the massive mobilization. All vehicles would be briefly checked over to see if they are in working order and all vehicles would be fueled. Enough supplies would be gathered to support the massive troop movement over land. This would take some time, and time was not something the officers were sure they had. But for now, everything seemed to be quiet. The News would be kept in the dark about this, a total media blackout would occur on all things militarily related. Anyone coming too close to the airbases with camera equipment would be detained until the operation had concluded. Total secrecy was required. Other Corps would follow suit, however, they would follow in to support the spearhead to come.
