(ANSA) - ROME, December 18 - The centre-left coalition, backed by the Communist Refoundation Party, have just confirmed the budget and tax rate for 1998. Because of projected increased spending on healthcare, infrastructure and education the average tax rate has risen by 66.7%. This increase will mainly be felt by those who earn the most, as the higher tax brackets have had the highest increase in tax rate, with the lowest tax bracket actually getting a tax cut.

After a long period of discussion over the budget, and the increase of the tax rate that would be necessary to get enough money, it was finally passed by the Chamber of Deputies last Tuesday, and passed by the Senate on Friday, just in time before their winter break.
