MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

15 May 2000

Dear Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs,

I would like to extend my hand out to you and thank you for the efforts that the United Kingdom played during the Middle East conflict. Access to Diego Garcia ensured that Australia was able to participate. It also revealed that we have a natural relationship between our nations that we should..... we need to capitalise on. We're aware that the previous Prime Minister signed a trade agreement with the United Kingdom. Whilst an important step, we don't see it as good enough of an agreement. Our economic relationship can be stronger then that agreement and so we would like to negotiate a free trade agreement to supersede that agreement. There are also many other areas that me and the Defence Minister wish to discuss with the Australia-United Kingdom relationship. We would like to begin an annual Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN), alternating between our two countries. The Defence Minister and I would like to visit London at your soonest convenience to meet with both you and the Secretary of State for Defence. We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
Kevin Rudd, MP.

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your email and your interest in pursuing closer relations between the United Kingdom and Commonwealth of Australia; something we too would like to see develop further. Due to existing discussions, I would like to propose an in-person meeting between us and our defence secretaries as outlined in your email to be scheduled in.
Based on our current timetable, we would be looking at the 1st July if this is within your availability? If in approval, whether your government would be happy to host the event?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kindest Regards,
Lawrence

Dear Mr. Adams,

I am currently in Israel but I am ready to fly home as our meeting is going no where. If your Foreign and Defence Secretary's are ready, we can meet in Canberra now. The Defence Minister is there at the moment and can welcome you two if my plane doesn't arrive on time.

Yours sincerely,
Kevin Rudd, MP.

Good Afternoon,

Due to unexpected circumstances, we would like to go ahead with the following representatives representing Her Majesty's Government

  • Secretary of International Development, Leon Hurst.
  • First Secretary, Taylor Heart.

They are due to set off imminently for Canberra to participate in the discussions, I hope this is acceptable.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kindest Regards,
Lawrence

Providing there were no problems, the aforementioned delegates departed the United Kingdom on a Royal Air Force Tristar with a few close aides to support their diplomatic mission to Australia. An unarmed security contingency would be on board and this would be discretely declared to the Australian Government prior to arrival. Notice would be given an hour before their touchdown in Australia to allow the government time to prepare their transport.

Dear Mr. Adams,

I am sorry but this would not be acceptable. The idea of AUKMIN is that it will be ministerial consultations between our equivalent Foreign and Defence Ministers. We can reschedule at a later date that suits all four of us. I will be going to Korea in the mean time.

Yours sincerely,
Kevin Rudd, MP.
