Dear Governor-General Håkan Juholt,

I would like to extend an invite to you to attend a proposed Ethiopian and Eritrean Peace Conference with the role of a mediator with the location and date to be confirmed.

The reason we have decided to select Sweden as a mediator is simply down to your experience of promoting peace across the world as well as your close proximity in the region within South Africa. Under the current proposals of the peace conference, both of our nations (Ethiopia and Eritrea) and the entire region of Eastern Africa are losing opportunities to grow and prosper, and the quality of life of our citizens is failing. The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has set themselves the goal of solving this issue once and for all and to establish a positive relationship between us and finally live up to the potential we have in the region. The main issue to be addressed most importantly is to transform the current de facto border between Eritrea and Ethiopia into a mutually recognized de jure one that will be recognised internationally by all parties including international bodies and countries within the region including the rearrangements to it that will grant both of our nations benefits on the long term.

I look forward to hearing from you and I hope that we can use this opportunity for peace in the Eastern African region.

Dear President Afwerki,

Thank you for your email and the enormous privilege of your offer, recongising the Sweden as one of the leading nations in promoting peace internationally. Talks between Ethiopia and Eritrea show great promise in cooperation for Africa and I hope many countries follow in your footsteps.

For a number of reasons, however, I would have to suggest that another country take this position as Mediator; one that is more aware of the situation as a whole. Whilst we aim to promote peace and will support however we can, with the conflict in Congo causing international concern, clear disagreements over Swedish control of South Africa - the last thing I believe the African continent needs is another western-country been involved at this time. I would suggest another African country or, if not, then perhaps the United States.
