The first deployment for the Katari surface action group, based out of INS Kardip in Kamorta, had begun with their departure from their homeport. Their sole objective was presence operations in the South China Sea, not a first for the country, but still important in light of recent events. The SAG is comprised of 4 Katari-class Destroyers (OOC: Type 055 Destroyer): BKS Katari, BKS Soman, BKS Chatterji, and BKS Nanda. Capt. Varun Bhatt, Commander of Destroyer Squadron 5, and his staff are embarked on BKS Katari. He would be ultimately responsible for the completion of this important deployment.
After the last ship left the pier, the Captain set his sights on the upcoming Straits of Malacca and Singapore Strait transit. While the other vessels in the SAG conducted their navigation briefs, Capt. Bhatt would be present for the one onboard BKS Katari. The brief would cover the track of the vessel, calls that would be made to VTS near Singapore, typical traffic patterns, and other information necessary to safely transit. The vessels would maintain a 2 nautical mile separation from each other in the TSS and transit between 16-18 knots, a typical merchant vessel speed in the straits. They would maintain a sharp lookout throughout.
In their VLS tubes, they would each be armed with 40 YJ-18A's, 10 HQ-10's, 40 CJ-10's, and 22 missile-launched anti-submarine torpedoes. All vessels and embarked helicopters would be fully manned, fully equipped, fully fueled, and prepared.
