An earthquake measuring 6.3 in magnitude would occur in an area 17 km north of the city of Arad, at 08:39am. The earthquake caused chaos as shocked residents of Arad rushed out of houses, vehicles, and buildings. Roads in some parts of the city cracked in two, while the walls of buildings collapsed, crushing parked cars. Numerous underground lines such as water pipelines and sewerage system were severely damaged; cutting water supplies to many towns and disrupting internet and telephone services throughout the entire region. The damaged sewerage system also made matters worse as it started contaminating the water from the damaged underground water pipelines. Thousands of properties including residential houses, business establishments, and overhead electrical poles, were destroyed by the earthquake and aftershocks.
