The East Coast of Australia would be one of the first places in the world to welcome in the year 2006. Fireworks would be launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House and across Sydney Harbour. The theme for the fireworks show was "A Diamond Night in Emerald City", a nod to Sydney's colloquial name of "the Emerald City" sharing the same name as a location in The Wizard of Oz, with the famous movie serving as the basis of the theme. It saw the four barges feature for the 9pm Family Fireworks while six barges feature with the city buildings return for the midnight show and in addition, it had a ten-second countdown projected on the pylons starting with the logo for Network 10. A question mark was shown in the nights leading up to the celebrations, which also doubled up as the curved end of the coat hanger. 1.5 million people would flood Sydney Harbour to watch the fireworks. A playlist of music would include:
  1. World Hold On (Children of the Sky) - Bob Sinclair
  2. Heist - Ben Folds
  3. He's the Wizard/March of the Munchkins (From "The Wiz" Soundtrack) - Thelma Carpenter
  4. I'll Supply The Love - Toto
  5. Home (From "The Wiz" Soundtrack) - Diana Ross

In Melbourne, fireworks were launched across the Yarra River bank area. There would be an intense police presence across the country from National Task Force Raptor making sure party goers were safe as the current National Terrorism Threat Advisory was still EXPECTED.
