In readiness for AEGIS I, a symbolic exercise to bring the four countries closer together, the Royal Navy had begun its departure procedures that would see the loading of supplies, ensuring the vessels and aircraft were fully kitted for their deployment ahead. After saying farewell to families, the five-strong group departed their respective naval bases. The destination? Rota Naval Base. The Spanish Government would be made aware of the timescale and the logistical support required when nearby to ensure a safe transition to the region.

The transit from the United Kingdom to Spain was utilized to carry out practice drills, including simulating fires, damage from enemy fire and combat drills to keep all participating sailors ready. Although for training, the vessels were operational and if requirements changed, would be capable of responding anywhere globally to respond to any potential threat. Until that time, the focus was to represent the United Kingdom in the multi-national exercise.

The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) would conduct final preparations and readiness for AEGIS I exercises with the Americans, Spanish, and Brits. The exercise would be the first multinational exercise for Korea, and the first exercise outside Korea for the Navy. The ROK Navy would have to cover the greater amount of distance to arrive and such would make plans to depart as soon as possible. The ROKS An Junggeun which was apart of the Naval Exercises off the coast of the Korean mainland would require reserving and checks before she would be cleared to head to the Spanish Naval Port. The time spent checking the vessel would give the Korean submariners time to go and visit their families. The submarines and submarine recovery ship would be checked before their departure.

They would leave the Jinhae Naval Base where the three submarines left their respective bases in Incheon, Jeju, and Busan. They would arrive at Jinhae where that night was spent refueling the ships and checking the weapons systems by engineers as the crews were briefed on the exercise. The following morning the ROKN Aegis I Task Force would depart Jinhae Naval Base and head to the Spanish Naval Port of Rota Naval Base. The ROK Navy would ensure that supplies were ample for the trip, and the Task Force would not require a resupply with a range of 12,000 nautical miles. The Submarines would travel both submerged by also surfaced as to not give the impression the surface vessel the ROKS Cheonghaejin was unaccompanied.

As the ships crossed the Pacific and Indian Ocean they would use the time to practice skills and necessary maneuverability. They did not know how the currents and temperatures differed in the North Atlantic, however, they would still be prepared. The submarines had their weapons readied at all times and the ROKS Cheonghaejin would conduct resupplying measures where needed and as an exercise to ensure strong cohesion between the units. In the time it took to arrive, the officers would practice their English and inter-nation coordination. While most of the senior officers were accustomed to working with the Americans and had done so in the past until the US withdrew from the Peninsula, they had not had the same working relationships with the Spanish or British. In their downtime the Submariners would play games, sing, eat, and work to keep their minds and souls cleaned and ready. Being underwater for prolonged time their experiences were unlike any of the rest of the navy. To be a submariner required the strength and will of a thousand tigers as their captain liked to say, and the Korean Submariners had no intention of being the weakest in the exercise.

With the various nations sending their vessels, the Spanish main Admiral for the exercise would order the preparation of the Spanish exercise force, this would mean that maintenance would take place on all Spanish ships designated for the exercise, meanwhile the crews of each ships would also conduct various drills across their vessels, they would make sure that everything was prepared and ready to conduct the exercise with maximum efficiency. This was the first time the Spruance-class destroyer would be put at the test as such extra precautions would be met. Its crew had already gone through extensive training for the vessel, but now they would have to put what they had learnt to the test. The Spanish Chief of Staff of the Navy had only allowed one of these destroyers to participate to make sure the Spanish Navy Crew knew what they were doing, alongside it two Alvaro de Bazan-class frigates to help bolster its capabilities, however in future the navy will use diferent kinds of compositions.

CONTEXT

Task Force 101 took the most direct route to Spanish waters. The Department of the Navy securely informed the Spanish Navy how quickly the it would take the American fleet to get there. While en route, the various ships would have surprise drills to test the readiness of sailors, from enlisted to officers. Throughout the entire journey, the ships and their crews monitored the surface and below-surface waters with both active and passive sonar from all of the ships. The ships would also practice taking evasive maneuvers and spotting targets on the horizon. Emergency drills from fires to hull breaches were also practiced, as well as biological, chemical, and nuclear attacks.

The Spanish authorities would wait for the participating nations to arrive to the Spanish Naval bases before giving the details of the exercise. They would make sure that the naval bases the UK, Korea and US would be staying were in great condition and able to dock their ships. Personnel would continue doing small scale drills in the docks, just as simulating fire fighting. They would also continue the maintenance of the docks make sure that fuel was in stockpile. The Spanish Department of Defence would inform the US that it was still waiting for the US to send its share of the funds for the exercise.

Meanwhile the Spanish Admiral in charge of the exercise would be preparing the debrief to give to his fellow admirals, preparing three dossiers to give to them with the details of the exercise. For now he would wait their arrival, he knew that the Korean Navy would take longer due to the distance between Spain and Korea.

As the British, Korean and American ships arrived, the dock authorities would instruct them where, how and when to station their ships, it would be easy as the Naval base was gigantic and able to support their ships. Once they were settled, various tents and resting areas would be available for their crews to fully rest in and mingle with each other. Food and non alcoholic drinks were available to all. Meanwhile the Spanish Dock Engineers would coordinate their efforts to fuel the Korean,British and American ships, and asking what supplies would they need and giving them what they lacked.

Meanwhile the Spanish Admiral would meet with the people in charge of each nation inside a common room, it was the officers office, where a large table was ready alongside monitors. They would all be escorted to this area to discuss the planning of the exercise.

20180611_180611b-001_rdax_775x440.jpg

The Admiral would begin to speak.

"I would like to thank you all for participating in the first AEGIS naval exercise, and I'm very grateful to meet such experienced Admirals such as yourself. This exercise was put forward by the Spanish Department of Defence, in order to test our nations capability in working together as one, to see if we can become something more than just four nations.

The first round of naval exercises as you know will focus on Anti-Submarine warfare and Anti-Surface warfare. The Anti-Submarine warfare will be divided into 2 rounds, where the defending Nations will use their surface vessels to detect and stop enemy submarines while the attacking Nations will use their submarines to detect and hit high value targets of the defenders, the teams will then swap. This will give us the crucial training regarding a deadly asset in the world, which is the submarine, the silent and deadly killer, if not detected early, and how we can use them to our advantage against other foes. I'll put forward the team I have developed, Team Alpha will be the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy, and Team Omega will be the Spanish Navy and the Korean Navy. This will provide us with various challenges, the US Navy currently doesn't field in this exercise submarines, which means the British Royal Navy will have to coordinate their efforts into conducting submarine warfare and anti-submarine warfare with the guidance of the US Surface ships and their owns vessels, it provides us with the opportunity to think outside the box, which most nations don't, and provide us with the knowledge to bolster our strengths while diminishing our weaknesses. Same goes for the Korean Navy who doesn't field any surface ships, which means the Spanish Navy will also coordinate their best efforts by conducting anti-submarine warfare, with help from the Korean Submarines.

After that training is done we will then move on to the Anti-Surface warfare part of the AEGIS program, it will consist of 4 Rounds where our Navies will use their assets to destroy the opposing fleet, as if we were in a war time scenario, one navy will team up with one the other. Meaning we will all be able to work together and cooperate together.

The first round of exercises will be the US navy and the Spanish Navy against the British Royal Navy and the Korean Navy. The second round of exercises will be the US navy and the British Royal Navy against the Spanish Navy and the Korean Navy. The third round of exercises will be the Spanish navy and the British Royal Navy against the US Navy and the Korean Navy. The final round of exercises will be all of our navies cooperating, against an opposing enemy ghost force. The ghost force will be provided by buoys, coordinating incoming missile and air strikes, detailing the movements by this enemy ghost force. In this occasion live fire can be used, however it will not be necessary, I leave that to your discretion, just try and avoid sinking all of our beautiful vessels " He said with a chuckle. "The Ghost force will have around 7 Surface vessels, 1 small aircraft carrier and 2 submarines, which will provide us with a challange to our forces. I'd like to hear your opinions on this program before we start."

The ROK Submarines and their support vessel would arrive near the Iberian Peninsula where they surfaced and began sailing towards the Straits where they would be communicating with the Spanish Coastal Services. They continued inside Spain's Exclusive Economic Zone and Maritime Boundaries as they arrived at their port of destination. The submariners would ensure their submarine was in deployment conditions and secured before heading surface side, standing at attention as their commander inspected them and ensured their uniforms were in good condition. They would in groups head towards their designated resting areas, with the submarine crew members working with their Spanish counterparts to refuel and ensure the submarines were ready for combat. Making sure their supplies and the Submarine Rescue Ship was restocked and secured.

The ROK Navy Senior Official responsible for training and coordination at the Naval Command in Pyeongtak would fly from Seoul to Madrid before taking a domestic flight to the training exercise. Vice Admiral Cho Young-ju and Captain An Hyunjae the training mission lead would join their Spanish hosts to the officers office. A translator earpiece was given to them as they listened to their Spanish counterparts open the exercise. After a short period, as neither the Americans or the British spoke, the Korean Admiral spoke.

Admiral Cho Young-ju: "We would like to thank the Republic of Spain for inviting the Republic of Korea and hosting these exercises. We are honored to be attending an exercise with three of histories largest and successful maritime nations. We hope to learn and improve and reach the level of capabilities, experience, and reputation, that your navies have attained. Strengthening our capabilities and showcasing international cooperation are only possible with the strategic foresight of Spain and we thank you for organizing these exercises. With the plan outlined, we believe it is a strong effort to adapt to the uncertainty in warfare. The team based exercise of course requires we adapt and work in a multi-national and multi-lingual setting. As you have hinted Admiral, the fundamentals of the exercise, are working in these conditions and strengthening our mutual capabilities. We look forward to the exercise and hope that all measures can be taken to ensure the best opportunities and learning experience. Thank you."

Arriving at the Navy Base in Spain was quite a symbolic event, promoting press to visit to witness and report on one of the larger gathering of multi-national vessels in years. The Union Jack waving, marking the arrival of the Royal Navy into port. HMS Somerset was the first, followed by HMS St Albans, HMS Coventry, HMS Trenchant and RFA Knightley. Abiding local instruction, the vessels moored and advised of the need for fuel and general stores. During the downtime, shifts on board each vessel alternated between carrying out drills to, if permitted by other naval assets, engaged in conversation and aimed to promote friendship between the participating countries. During that time, the Commanding Officer of the British Task Force arrived in the Officers Quarters in time for the briefing from their Spanish Counterparts. Given the chance, he spoke enthusiastically about the training to come:

"Echoing that of our Korean Counterparts, Thank you to the Republic of Spain for the hosting of AEGIS I which I am eager to see develop the cooperation between all of our countries and serve as a fantastic training opportunity." He dropped silent, ready for the next person to speak or for the Exercise to commence.

The meeting would be concluded, the Spanish Admiral would thank the English and the Korean Admirals for their praise and trust on the Spanish Institutions, a quick debrief would be given to them again, and would all be excused to their forces.
A day would pass, this was a rest day, so that every crew, vessel and weapon system was fresh for the day.

It would be a calm morning, no wind, with the sun coming down on the people in the docks. The Exercise was about to finally start between all nations, the first round of Anti-Submarine training was to start, as such, with the knowledge that the participants knew they designated teams. The Anti-Submarine warfare would be divided into 2 rounds, where the defending Nations will use their surface vessels to detect and stop enemy submarines while the attacking Nations will use their submarines to detect and hit high value targets of the defenders.

First Round:
Defenders - Team Alpha (UK/US)
Attackers - Team Omega (Spain/Korea)

cms-image-000005427.jpg

The nations in the exercise would be asked to deploy their assets in the IN square (Transit Map), 30 KM of distance from each team, and 50 km from the coast, which would mean that they would be close enough for a possible long range detection, and able to communicate with each other and with the Spanish Navy Docks.

The Spanish Fleet would be the first to move towards their Team designated area, keeping constant communication with the British, US and Korean Fleets. All its systems were active, however their weapon systems deactivated, they would go into normal formation, with the Submarine in front of the force, the Frigates flaking the fleet, the destroyer in the middle and the supply ship behind. The Spanish Naval Authorities would make sure that none civilian craft entered the zone of the exercise. The Spanish fleet would wait for the other exercise members to arrive at the location, either by following it or otherwise.

The Spanish Dock would send out a encrypted radio message to all participants.

"The AEGIS I EXERCISE IS COMMENCING SHORTLY. Once in the designated location you will receive another radio message on this frequency. Communication of hits, misses, maneuvers, firing and detection will flow from both teams towards us in this channel which we will relay to the opposing team in order to keep realism in a war time scenario in which enemy forces do not have radio and communications with the enemy."

The ROK Submarines would follow their Team's fleet, sailing in formation as the Spanish had suggested with the 3 ROK Submarines forming a V formation spread apart as they sailed ahead of the main task force of surface vessels. The ROK Vessels would be silent, their crews on combat alert as they moved slowly across their starting zone, waiting for the officials to start the exercise. The communications room had a separate receiver for the officials who would inform them of the umpire affairs, while another for the Omega Task Force. The ROK Ships would be using passive sonar, their operators with a book of sonar signatures to be able to identify the vessel. The submarine ships listened quietly as they glided under the Atlantic Ocean.

TOP SECRET

TEAM ALPHA

The America Task Force, including the aforementioned vessels of the USS Ticonderoga, USS Arleigh Burke, USS Barry, USS Spruance, and USS Supply would sail into the IN sector. The American fleet had a primary communications crew for the exercise, as well as a special communications crew that would be used to communicate with the other teams for the sake of the exercise - this way the communications teams that were focusing on the realism of the operation itself wouldn't have to be distracted with talking with outside team leaders. The Arleigh Burke and Barry would lead the formation by being in the front right and left of the Task Force, while the USS Spruance was following in the center behind them, with the USS Supply following behind the Spruance, and finally the USS Ticonderoga guarding the rear. The American vessels, which were presently using their passive radar and sonar, would await the arrival of the British fleet so that the exercise could begin. The other team would be informed that while of course the American surface ships would not be firing their actual weapons, they would turn on their weapon systems when preparing to fire (and when simulating a fire) to give the opposing team a possible opportunity to detect them in order to increase realism. They would securely ask that the other team afford the Americans and British the same courtesy.

Conclusion of the exercises briefing couldn't have come soon enough, crews of the Royal Navy eager to run drills and work with other countries to show how they can all integrate and cooperate together. Despite having a rest day, the focus was on preparing all the vessels. Ensuring they were fully supplied, grateful to be offered stores by the Spanish Government. Weapon systems configured for the training exercise and internal briefings took place to ensure all health and safety policies were met. It was also noted that due to all vessels been operationally active, if needed, they were able to abandon the exercise to tend to any requirements across the globe. The next morning, the Royal Navy were already up and moving out of the port in formation. The Wave-class Tanker at the rear, keeping a solid distance as they were not part of the official exercise, but were mostly for support when transiting. This time would allow them to conduct internal drills and simulations; plus some sunbathing on the deck. Meanwhile, the Type 42 Destroyer and Type 23 Frigates were at the forefront. Shadowed by the Trafalgar-class Submarine. Their route consisted of making straight for the coordinates provided, IN. They were ready for the exercise to commence.

[From this point onward, it will be turn based, it will be Bruno - Jamie - Jay - Odinson , you will have more than 24h to post but try and keep it within that time, first posts beyond this will server to plan with your partner, after it comes full circle, we are clear to engage.]

With all forces in position it was time to initiate the Exercise. A global transmission to all the participants would ensue. "The exercise is about to begin, you will have a period of of 1 Hour to discuss battle plans with your partner, and possible tactics to apply. From this point onward communication between teams as ceased, you will communicate to this frequency for the purpose of coordinating strikes, hit and misses on the other team, as if it was a war scenario. Good luck and godspeed"

With that the Spanish Admiral would contact in a encrypted way the Korean Fleet leader. " Admiral Cho Young-ju pleasure to meet you, I believe that since your force only consists of submarines we presently have the advantage, I believe that moving two of your submarines on the flanks of the Enemy force is the best course of action while your last one stays behind as reinforcement, meanwhile our own submarine will go through the center, if we keep a low profile in sound and movements I believe we could take them by suprise. Our surface fleet will keep out of the fight, using our radars and sonars to detect the enemy force and sending that information towards the Submarines, we will only act in the defense of our own fleet as if we were only conducting Submarine Warfare, keep in mind the information sent will be only time only, in order to keep the submarines hidden. Do you like this plan or should we follow it? We do know that plans never survive first contact with the enemy force."

While the Spanish Admiral was doing this, he would order his fleet to prepare for the incoming exercise, exposing only the fronts of the vessels, remaining in the same formation, encase the surface radar of his surface fleet caught the enemy force, this was to minimize exposure to their weaponry before they come into contact with them. The Submarine was ready to sail out with his Korean Partners.

The ROK Submarines would move on the flanks of the fleet, with the ROKS Son Wonil on the left flank of the Spanish Fleet and the ROKS Jeongji on the right flank while the ROKS An Junggeun stayed in the rear to provide support in the event the fleet was engaged or being encircled. The naval radar signature officers watching the sonar would listen to any movement as they attempted to identify the other vessels, while the submarine. As the fleet maneuvered, Captain An Hyunjae would pick up the encrypted radio. The Submarine with Captain An was in the rear, while making sound, any vessel in vicinities would've probably been picked up by the Spanish destroyers."Admiral, the pleasure is mine. The fleet has already maneuvered, and the ROKS Jeongji maneuvering to your starboard flank while the ROKS Son Wonil is maneuvering to the port side. Once we determine where the enemy ships are, we can adjust and send the pack ahead to engage with the main fleet acting as a reserve. If your fleet can deploy anti-submarine helicopters, we can work expedite the process of locating the hostile vessels and engage much more quickly.""

With both the United Kingdom and United States on the defending team, focus was now turning to defending themselves from the expected submarine activity. To remain at sea, RFA Knightley, the Wave-class Tanker, begun to withdraw in the distance and retain a passive approach. Keeping in the distance and able to support the frontline vessels as required. Meanwhile, the Type 23 Frigates which are primarily Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates were to be the initial response. Ensuring all electronic warfare and radars were activated. The frigate hosted the Surface Ship Torpedo Defence and Type 182 Towed Torpedo Decoy to support such efforts that is backed up by the anti-submarine capable aircraft of the Sea King and Lynx Helicopters. With the historic experience of the United States Navy, the British Flotilla Commander opened communications with his American Counterpart to dictate the plan. "With your experiences, I am eager to hear the plan you may have for the fight ahead." he spoke optimistically.

The American fleet would maintain the aforementioned distance and would safely begin zig-zag evasive maneuvers since they knew that they were being hunted by enemy submarines. The vessels would continue to passively and actively try to detect the enemy submarines through the use of sonar while physical eyes on deck with binoculars, and surface radar, would scan the sees for any submarines should they happen to surface. Because the crews were now at general quarters, they were prepared at their weapons stations and ready to simulate fire. Rear Admiral Black would stay in close communication with his British counterpart and would keep him securely informed of American actions.
