APPOINTMENT OF AMANDA VANSTONE AS AMBASSADOR TO ITALY |

| The Government has today announced that South Australian Senator Amanda Vanstone will become Australia's next Ambassador to Italy and San Marino. The Senator, from the Liberal Party, has a long and distinguished career within the Australian Senate, including serving as Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate more recently and as Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs from 1996 to 1998 under the Howard Government. The Senator will retire from the Australian Senate to take up the post and the South Australian Government has already confirmed that Anne Ruston will be appointed to serve the remainder of Senator Vanstone's term. Ambassador Vanstone will work from the Australian Embassy at 5 Via Antonio Bosio, one of the few fully dedicated Embassy compounds of Australia in the world and will reside at 40 Salita dei Parioli, one of the even fewer Ambassador's Residences in the world available to Australian Ambassadors. She will work alongside closely with the Ambassador to the Holy See, with Rome being one of only two cities in the world to host two Australian diplomatic missions (the other being The Hague, with the Australian Embassy to the Netherlands and the Australian Permanent Representative to the Global Assembly).  |
