SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: SECRET (Encrypted) |
1 July 1996 Adriaan Marissens Prime Minister of Belgium 16 Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat City of Brussels, Brussels-Capital Region BELGIUM 1000 |
Dear Mr. Marissens, It is my observations that your country has gone through a lot recently and your standing with the West is not in a particularly good position given your Marxist-Leninist government. Being a left-wing Western government I think it is on us to help bridge the divide which is now facing Belgium and the West. We also generally believe you probably personally need some rest and relaxation from the stress of all the issues in your country. I am formally inviting you to Australia on a non-official visit just to have a chat with me and to help clear your head a little and see some sights. I think it would be a fantastic opportunity for us to get to know each other a little more and hopefully bridge that divide. Yours Sincerely, P.J. Keating. |
