Dear Minister Tejeda,

I am reaching out because after the recent meeting between our Ambassador to Spain and your Minister for Foreign Affais, they came to an understanding that the National Gallery of Australia will undertake a special exhibition of the works of Pablo Picasso on loan from the Spanish Government and/or Spanish art institutions. Currently in the gallery's collection is a full set of one of Picasso's Vollard Suite. Everything else will need to come from Spain. We're looking at having around about 100 pieces on loan from Spain. We will split the gallery into 10 sections with about 8-12 works per section, those being:

  • Early Academic/Youth (1880s-1901)
  • Blue Period (1901-1904)
  • Rose Period (1904-1907)
  • Proto-Cubism Period (1907-1912)
  • Analytic Cubism (1912-1915)
  • Synthetic Cubism and Collage (1915-1925)
  • Classical Period (1925-1930)
  • Surreal/Political Period (1930-1950)
  • Post-War & Ceramics Period (1950-1965)
  • Late Works (1965-1973)
We would also like some prominent pieces from the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid such as:
  • Guernica (1937)
  • Woman in Blue (1901)
  • Head of a Young Woman (1906)
  • Le Compotier (Fruit Bowl) (1910)
  • Figures au bord de la mer I (1932)
  • Portrait of Alexandre Riera (1897)
  • Tête de femme (Fernande) (1909/1909‑10)
  • Instruments de musique sur une table (1924)
  • Le viol (The Violation) (1931)
Please inform us of the total value of these works and we will organise insurance for them through the Australian Government International Exhibitions Insurance Program. We hope to begin this exhibition on the 31st of May and run it until the 21st of September.

Yours sincerely,
Stephen Smith.
