HYDROGRAPHER OF AUSTRALIA |
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: PROTECTED |
20 April 2007 |
Dear Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, I am reaching out with an exciting proposal between our two nations. Currently there are numerous wrecks of the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Navy, as well as other smaller numbers from other allies such as the Royal Navy, scattered across the South Pacific and Eastern Indian Oceans as a result of combat action seen in World War II that have yet to be discovered. Australia has now retained its full hydrographic surveying capabilities which is solely the responsibility of the Royal Australian Navy's Hydrographic Service, to which I am the head of. We're not sure of the capacity of the U.S. Navy to undertake hydrographic survey, but given there is now a presence of U.S. Navy in Australia, we are proposing a joint effort to undertake surveying to help identify the location of these wrecks. We think this will be a fantastic opportunity to deepen our interoperability and defence relationship in numerous areas as well as honour those who made the ultimately sacrifice for our nations and bring some closure to the families given we now have the technology available to discover these wrecks. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Commodore Stewart Dunne. |
