OFFICIAL SECRETARY TO THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF AUSTRALIA
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: PROTECTED
20 April 2007
Dear Chief of Staff Yilmaz,

Her Excellency Dame Quentin Bryce, the Governor-General of Australia, is planning on attending the Anzac Day commemorations this year at Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25th. As always, there will be numerous dignitaries of the Australian and New Zealand Governments and respective Defence Forces in attendance at Anzac Day, including Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Lieutenant General David Hurley. And as always, Turkey is always invited to send their own dignitaries and members of their Armed Forces. However, none of these visits shall be taken as official visits and we do not expect any meetings to take place between official representatives of our governments. We require that an RAAF VIP aircraft be able to land at Canakkale Airport to deliver Her Excellency to Anzac Cove. The Australian Embassy in Ankara will organise her transport on the ground. As always there will also be thousands of citizens of Australians and New Zealanders who will make the annual pilgrimage and we expect they are given the utmost hospitality and will have free passage without hindrance and to afford them the necessary protection and assistance whilst in your country.

Yours sincerely,
Stephen Brady.

[Subject]: Confidential // ANZAC Commemorations 2007
Dear Mr. Brady,

The Office of the President acknowledges with thanks the notification regarding the intention of Her Excellency Dame Quentin Bryce, Governor-General of Australia, to attend the Anzac Day commemorations at the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April of this year, together with senior dignitaries and representatives of the Australian and New Zealand Governments and Defence Forces.

The Government of Prime Minister Ayşe Çiller has been duly informed of this communication. Türkiye attaches the highest importance to the enduring spirit of respect and remembrance that binds our peoples through the commemorations at Gallipoli. The annual Dawn Service and other events take place on Turkish sovereign territory only with the cooperation and generous assistance of the Republic of Türkiye. We remain committed to providing this cooperation, as we have done historically.

The Office of the President wishes to take this moment to reiterate the commitments given by President Atatürk. That those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.

The Ministry of Interior confirms that an RAAF VIP aircraft may be authorized to land at Çanakkale Airport for the purpose of conveying Her Excellency to the commemorative site, in coordination with the Australian Embassy in Ankara.

For all attendees, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked our office to draw attention to the following matters:
  • Attendance Passes: Access to the commemorative services is permitted only with a valid attendance pass. The registration of the event is the responsibility of Australia, and registration is essential for all participants to pass through security.
  • Visa Requirements: All Australian citizens are reminded to ensure that they have secured the appropriate entry visas prior to arrival in Türkiye.
  • Security: On arrival at the commemorative sites, attendees will undergo airport-style security screening. A strict liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAG) policy applies; all items must be in containers of 100ml or less. Prohibited items will be confiscated and not returned.
  • Public Order: The Turkish Police and the Gendarmerie will continue to take all necessary measures to provide the required protection and assistance for visitors throughout the commemorative period. Visitors are kindly reminded to remain observant of Turkish laws and customs while on holiday or in attendance at commemorations.
The Office of the President reiterates that Türkiye extends its warm welcome to the many Australian and New Zealand citizens who make the annual trip to Gallipoli, and trusts that they will find the same hospitality and respect that have characterized these occasions for generations.

Respectfully,
Cevdet Yılmaz
Office of the Presidency
