[1] OVERVIEW

[1a] BACKGROUND
The protection that the Royal Australian Navy give in the Indian Ocean is pivotal to combat sea–based terrorism and other illegal activities, such as hijacking, piracy, and slavery, also known as human trafficking as well as assisting seafaring vessels in distress. If the flow of ships and cargo in the region stops it will impact on everyone in the Commonwealth and more widely around the world. Promoting peace and security in the region helps to ensure the safe flow of oil and trade.​

With the Department of Defence preparing a pre-deployment list, 72 hours notice would be given to all crews listed. With all the crews being warned, those already on the ships in the docks would begin pre-deployment checks, as well as loading up all vessels with enough supplies to last them. HMAS Success would also be fully loaded with the maximum amount of fuel (Aviation & Diesel), Munitions, Water, Naval Stores and Consumables. A route would also be planned and sent to all the ships taking part: PF > OF > NG > MH > MI > MJ.

With all the vessels now fully stocked, the crews began to say their goodbyes to the loved ones that waved them off. The Australian vessels slowly left the dock under the watchful eyes of the personnel guiding them out. Crews stood along the sides of the ships waving goodbye to the loved ones, once cleared of the ports and docks and in open waters the crews got to work ensuring the maintenance of the vessels were in tip top shape, the helmsman's were given the course for the vessels to head towards the Indian Ocean.

Along the route towards the Indian Ocean, the crews would do various drills across all three of the ships including the practicing off transferring supplies when needed. The crews would be fully prepared to receive and help any and/or vessels in the area that needed their help.

Following negotiations with the Commonwealth of Australia, to promote cooperation it was agreed for a joint patrol task force that would be dpeloyed in the Indian Ocean to protect trade routes and act as a rapid deployable force if required.

Following discussions with the Australian Government, Operation Gateway was given the green light by the Royal Navy that would see a sole Type 23 Frigate, HMS Montrose, be attached to the Australian Task Group to promote security and stability in the Indian Ocean. This would also serve as a solid staging point for exercises and cooperation between the participating countries. Accompanied by the Fleet Air Arms lynx helicopter and Royal Marines from the 47 Commando Raiding Group; the vessel would be capable to respond to any mission deemed necessary and working closely with International Partners. Resupplying at Gibraltar, Cyprus and Diego Garcia if required, the Frigate would follow the route to the Suez Canal with the intention of having a stop at Diego Garcia until it was ready to meet the rest of the Gateway Task Group. Naturally, the Australian Navy would be made aware of Montroses' position and estimated arrival times through encrypted channels. The vessel would be sure to stay within friendly or international waters to prevent dispute.

With the Royal Australian naval vessels being out at sea for some time now, news would reach them that the Swedish Royal Navy along with the British Royal Navy would be deploying to help participate in the operation. HMAS Anzac along with HMAS Adelaide would be refuelled and replenished by the deployed replenishment vessel, once the replenishment was completed HMAS Success would head for Diego Garcia to refuel. The British Administration would be notified for the arrival of the Australian Vessel, once in the area the Australian replenishment vessel would head to the dock at the British choice and refuel and replen, once it was refuelled and replen the vessel would head back towards to the other Australian Vessels.

Situation Report
In conjunction with the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Navy of Great Britain, the Kingdom of Sweden has agreed to supply in the support of a joint patrol operation in the Indian Ocean promoting not only joint working initiatives between common partners but also enhancing the security of the region. As detailed in official Australian Royal Navy documentation the role of the patrol is fundamentally to combat sea–based terrorism and other illegal activities, such as hijacking, piracy, and slavery (also known as human trafficking) as well as assisting seafaring vessels in distress.
