Collective Clips

Collective Clips is Thailand’s most popular online video sharing platform, developed by techno-utopian enthusiasts in early 2005. Witnessing the dramatic rise of SahaiLink, they secured initial funding from the Democrat Party-aligned provincial federations seeking alternative media hosting services in late 2004. Currently, the platform reports more than 37 million monthly active users. Independent analysts suggest that Collective Clips’ success stemmed from its user-friendly and user-centric philosophies. The platform moves beyond providing service to host and sharing videos to offering editing tools and online videography courses.

Thai PBS has described Collective Clips as “a place where its workers’ council members appear to prioritize educating its user base on how to express themselves creatively through video production, editing, and sharing with the world.” Since its launch, the video blog, also known as a vlog, has grown to be Collective Clips’ most popular genre that receiving more than 13 million “views” daily. The platform’s users often film themselves cooking, travelling, complaining, or performing hobbies. Such a genre has contributed to Thailand’s emerging socialist digital culture.

Musicians, singers, and music video producers have utilized Collective Clips as a primary medium for distributing creative works since the platform experienced a massive surge in popularity in mid-2005. On average, the music video genre receives three to nine million views daily, depending on the availability of new artistic works. Video snippets of news reporting and gaming videos also enjoyed significant popularity by Collective Clips’ user base. Many individuals in Thailand have inadvertently become internet personalities because of such a platform.

Like other social media services, Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society plays a regulating role in ensuring these platforms comply with national laws on privacy and collective ownership. After intense and prolonged democratic deliberation in 2005, the National Assembly enacted a new confederal agreement. It recognizes users as the owners of their video blogs across the platform, citing the nature of such productions as creative works deserving of ownership rights.
