Your Excellency,

On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye I'd like to convey our desire to turn a new page in the recent complex history of Turkish–British relations.

We recognize that our bilateral ties have, in recent years, been marked by strain, particularly in the aftermath of the Bahçeli's War. Yet, the current government holds firmly to the belief that the United Kingdom remains a historic partner of the Turkish people, a partner with whom we have shared not only moments of difficulty, but also decades of constructive engagement.

Bahçeli's Wars, while a painful chapter, do not and should not define the entirety of our relationship. From the early years of the Republic, through the challenges of the Cold War, and into the period of expanding economic and cultural exchange in the latter half of the 20th century, Türkiye and Britain have found common cause in promoting stability, open trade, and mutual respect. By the end of the century, our nations had established a pattern of cooperation in NATO, in regional diplomacy, and in fostering people-to-people connections that enriched both societies. With the collapse of NATO, a lack of regional diplomacy, and a decline in people-to-people ocnnections, it s no surprise that our relations have teethered off over the past decade.

Prime Minister Çiller has made clear her view that strengthening ties with the United Kingdom is a strategic priority. To that end, we propose a roadmap for renewed engagement:
  • Restoration of full diplomatic and working relations, with regular high-level consultations between our foreign ministries.
  • Exploration of expanded trade and commercial agreements, with a view to increasing bilateral investment and market access.
  • British support in addressing Türkiye’s current economic depression, including financial dialogue and potential initiatives in infrastructure and commerce.
  • Close coordination on Cyprus, where our shared interest in stability and peaceful coexistence remains vital to regional security.
Our two nations have, in the past, demonstrated that cooperation between Ankara and London can yield tangible benefits for both peoples and for the wider region. We believe that spirit can and must be rekindled.

Prime Minister Çiller would be eager to hold a direct conversation with Prime Minister Ashford at the earliest mutually convenient opportunity. She also extends her warm congratulations to him for earning the confidence and endorsement of former Prime Minister Evans.

It is my sincere hope that this letter will serve as the first step toward a renewed era of trust, dialogue, and partnership between our countries.

Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Regards,
Sümeyye Boz
Minister of Foreign Affairs
