The District of Columbia National Guard stands alone as the only U.S. National Guard which owes its allegiance to a federal district. Because of the unique status of the District, including the fact that it does not have a governor or state government, the commander-in-chief of the Guard is the President of The United States, making it the only National Guard force that is always directly under the command of the President at all times. The D.C. National Guard is well-known for its honor guard performances, as well as its real responsibility to protect the capital under normal circumstances, and also its normal duty in protecting the Presidential inauguration every four years. The D.C. National Guard was known for including some of the first post-Civil War black military units who protected the District and served over seas in World War 1 and World War 2. Today, the D.C. National Guard remains an integral and storied force in the United States National Guard.
