AIR STRIKE PRACTICE

Classified Information

Operation Background

As part of the routine practice program of th Egyptian Air Force and Egyptian Navy, the designated attack and naval attack squadrons would be ordered to practice and improve their air strike capabilities.

Practiced skill: Air strike I (land targets)
Deployed Forces

  • 2nd Attack Squadron
  • 3rd Attack Squadron
  • 6th Attack Squadron
  • 8th Attack Squadron
  • 13th Attack Squadron
  • 1st Naval Air Attack Squadron
  • 2nd Naval Air Attack Squadron
  • 3rd Naval Air Attack Squadron
Logistical Details

Different land targets would be assigned in unpoplated areas, simulating different types of objectives (houses, bunkers, airfields, general infrastructure, etc.). The aircraft would carry a variety of differed loadouts, in land-attack configurations. They would vary from flight to flight. All operations would be executed from teh respective squadrons bases.

This course would be destined for all squadrons operating Su-34 and Tu-22M3 attack aircraft. The pilots would be tasked with carrying out a series of simulated strikes agains land targets of different sizes and types, making use of a variety of special missiles and bombs. They would do so under different circumstances, including day and night flights and a variety of different metereologies.

Some of the employed missiles would be the Kh-29, Kh-25, Kh-59, Kh-58, Kh-15 and multiple freen fall and unguided bombs.

The pilots would first undergo briefings on the technical aspects of the different types of missiles and ordnance, before beginnin with the real flight simulations.

Each Squadron would condcut the theoretical lessons in their respective bases, and the second part would also see their locations as points of departure and return.

The first drills would consist of ordinary approach and engagement of land targets in the form of buildings. For this purpose, a series of abandoned stone and brick buildings in the southwestern part of Egypt would be employed. No civilian population would be in the area, and advisories would be given out to alert any potential commercial flight in the area.

The Su-34 would be loaded with 2x Kh-29 each, with a max range of 30km. The Tu-22M3s would employ 1x Kh-15 long range ballistic missile, with ordinary warhead.

The aircraft would be combined in pairs, and each flight would have a specific time range to engage and launch the missiles. They would do so during daytime, approaching at a standard altitude, until the last 80km from the target, moment in which they would dive to a low altitude to avoid radar detection, only to quickly rise to 2000m at 28km from the target (Su-34) and 250km (Tu-22M3) and launch their missiles, once the target was acquired and locked on the screens.

The missiles would make impact on the targeted structure, and the aircraft would cut their run and return to base.

The training drills would continue, using alternatively different loadouts, with the objective of gaining more experience employing the air-to-surface missiles.

They would practice different approach strategies, not only trying to fly under the radar, but also using high altitude vectors. The pilots would also begin conducting night operations, to get more familiar with the systems and rely more on them during the limited operational conditions of the night.

The pilots of both types of aircraft would at the same time study technical information of the different missiles, like minimum and maximum detect, lock and fire distances.

All this would be done with the proper grade of secrecy.

Practice would continue employing a mix of the different land-attack missiles. The pilots would have to operate under different meteorological conditions and continue employing different approach routes and altitudes.

They would not only practice against medium and large buildings, but also practice how to use their available load out to neutralize and destroy enemy runways to render hostile air bases useless. For this, they would practice on streets currently out of service and abandoned. They would not only use their missiles but also unguided bombs.

Special attention would be given to night operations, as this would be one of the most probable circumstances for future real combat operations, using the cover of the darkness to protect any attack run, considering that neighboring african nations lack a proper aerial radar detection system.

After multiple days of practice under different conditions and employing a variety of missiles and bombs on different types of targets, the pilots would have gained a good level of expertise in conducting airstrikes. They would also be accustomed to operate in the geographic and climatic scenarios available in northern Africa.

They would now be fully capable to effectively complete strike missions using the aforementioned load outs. In addition, the pilots would have also gained more flight hours and therefore more practice and expertise in operating their respective aircraft.

With this complete, the pilots of all Air Force and Naval squadrons would return to their usual routines.

Training complete.
