In the 1955 Italian general election, the party obtained half of the vote and at least half of the seats in the country's Chamber of Deputies. It was and remains a major faction within the Italian political left, strongly led by the PSI. Then, in 2006, the party gained the overall majority to secure absolute power within the government as other political parties bickered among themselves after the Black Dawn "Alba Nera" Incident when unidentified terrorists bombed the plane carrying most high-level government officials, including the prime minister and his family. The subsequent terror attacks throughout Italy killed other important officials. To this day, the PCI pledges to find those responsible for the crimes and vows to stabilize the country.
