Exercise Swarm Resistance was the process that would lead 64 Squadron, RAF Regiment, into becoming the primary CBRN Squadron for the British Armed Forces; capable of deploying to domestic incidents within the UK Territories or on an international level. Whilst they would retain their normal RAF Regiment role, they would be the first to respond to any CBRN threats and training was to include scenarios that mirrors the Battle of Europe Chemical Attacks, using vehicles in operations and responding to other domestic issues.

Exercise Swarm Resistance had begun, a big conversion for No. 64 Squadron, the Royal Air Force Regiment as they become a defence against Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear threats against the United Kingdom and her allies. This exercise was to run through the 600-man regiment the basics of CBRN, through to the usage of different vehicles and responding to a variety of events that they could be called too. From Domestic to an International Response. The initial process? Get everyone ready. Briefings and classes took place on a platoon level for each of the six companies at the CBRN Centre. These briefings going through the orientation that they should know regarding their role but also the fitting process of getting their CBRN gear, adjusting into it and getting the feel for their CBRN Equipment. These briefings and classes were taking place across the first week, ensuring each soldier is able to put their gear on, maintain their health, and know what to do in a problem.

temperatures may be dropping across Europe, but for the RAF Regiment, it's another day. Briefings and testings have been completed across the 600-strong regiment. All those involved, competent with the CBRN-specialist equipment they have gone through orientation and testing on. From maintaining it, wearing it to doing repairs in the field if required. Now the real training was to begin. Their first step was combat in said equipment. With the possibility of getting deployed to combat with CBRN agents a threat, they would need to be able to competently respond, and fight if neccessary. Split into a defend and attack group of 300 (3 companies each), they were to all be in CBRN Attire and carrying out an attack/defence. Navigating buildings in close combat with blank firing attachments. The attacking group utilizing the Landrover WMIK's in support. They would run through the exericse, before swapping the teams around.

The Exercise in Urban Conflict took a positive move forward. British Soldiers carrying out Building Clearance, utilising the Landrover WMIK's from long distance as a Fire Support Group. This training provided an insight into using the CBRN equipment on a live enemy with the threat of Chemical Weapons present. Preparing the RAF Regiment for any future threats. The Urban Combat Exercises lasted for two days of the whole CBRN Training Regime, going through an enormous amount of aspects to make sure those involved are fully aware of what they need to be doing in such environments. Following the closure of that aspect of training, they'd begin to embark on briefings surrounding medical support. To be able to treat others, and themselves in containment units became a fundamental part of their CBRN conversion.

Medical procedural training surrounding the use of Chemical Weapons had begun, with the limitations that the CBRN attire offered soldiers, they would need to be able to stabilise themselves in combat situations without having to remove any of the equipment used to protect them against any chemical or biological weapons. This offered a great threat. In individual platoons, the training took place. Working hand-in-hand with this section of the course, it was also an opportunity to show those in the Regiment how to handle civilians who had been effected by such weapons of mass destruction. Utilising Decontamination Tents which could prove useful in future operations abroad and for domestic issues.

The Medical Training surrounding CBRN Environments had been considered a pleasant success; allowing those in the regiment to competently respond on a medical-level, work with decontaminating as well as aiding themselves in the field if required. Training went ahead to the final phase; domestic. The Battle of Europe revealed a flaw in a solid response to domestic CBRN threats. This threat is something the RAF Regiment will be taking control of. Responding to any domestic incidents. For the next few days, they were to be working in much smaller units responding to 'scenarios' using the MAN Support vehicles and Battlefield Ambulances to work with local emergency services in a CBRN threat environment. This would serve a great benefit for any future chemical or biological threats to the United Kingdom.

The Training Course that has led No. 64 Squadron from the RAF Regiment to become certified in CBRN has been complete, debriefings taking place and awarding selected individuals who had performed with excellence throughout the training exercise. A Senior Member of the RAF had also attended to give the squadron their official certification to carry out not just CBRN operations internationally, but to support domestic problems in support of local emergency services if there was a demand for it. Following the conclusion and certification period, the equipment from the RAF and Army was returned to their rightful barracks and the regiment returning to their bases to continue their duties.
