Your Excellencies On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye, it is my great honor to extend to you a formal invitation to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games, to be held in Istanbul on Friday, 25 July 2008. As a city uniquely situated across two continents, Istanbul will proudly host this historic occasion under the theme, “Two Continents, One Flame.” The ceremony will take place along the Bosphorus, symbolizing the bridge between Europe and Asia, and will culminate at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, where the Games will be officially opened by the President of the Republic of Türkiye. The Olympic Games will continue through Sunday, 10 August 2008, bringing together nations from around the world in a spirit of peace, friendship, and shared excellence. In the spirit of the Olympic Games, we humbly call upon the nations of the world to embrace the ideals that have, for generations, guided this tradition, those of friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect. The Olympic Movement has long stood as a symbol that humanity, in all its diversity, may come together in peaceful competition and shared purpose, fostering understanding and unity across borders. At a time when our world faces division and uncertainty, His Excellency the President has invited you to this gathering in Istanbul to serve as a renewed commitment to peace that we may look upon one another not as strangers or rivals, but as brothers and sisters bound by the common blood of humanity. May the flame that unites two continents also illuminate a path toward harmony among all peoples, inspiring us to uphold the timeless vision of a more peaceful and united world. The Government of Türkiye places the highest priority on the safety and security of all distinguished guests. Comprehensive measures have been undertaken by the Turkish National Police, the Gendarmerie, and the Armed Forces to ensure a secure and welcoming environment for all Heads of State, Heads of Government, and their designated representatives. In that spirit, the Turkish Government's rules regarding the importation of personal defense weapons have been amended to permit designated security officials to conceal carry their service weapons in public, except in Government Offices and Olympic Venues, where they must be safely secured in a safe. More details regarding security arrangements shall be made as details of the event are finalized. We would be deeply honored by your presence at this momentous occasion.
