Dear Governor-General Peter Cosgrove,
I have the honour, on behalf of the State of Israel, to inform Your Excellency of the appointment of Tzipi Livni as Israel’s Ambassador to the Commonwealth of Australia.
Ambassador Livni brings to this important diplomatic assignment a distinguished record of public service, leadership, and international experience.
A lawyer by profession, she served in Israel’s security services before entering political life and was elected to the Knesset in 1999. In the years that followed, she held a number of senior governmental positions, including Minister of Regional Cooperation, Minister of Housing and Construction, Minister of Justice, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 2000, she briefly served as Prime Minister of the State of Israel, becoming one of the country's youngest leaders and gaining valuable experience at the highest level of government and led the country alongside Australia through the war with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Her tenure was marked by intensive diplomatic engagement and by efforts to strengthen Israel's relationships with its international partners.
She subsequently continued to serve Israel in senior political and diplomatic capacities. As Foreign Minister, she represented Israel extensively abroad and played a prominent role in international diplomacy and negotiations. In 2005, she became leader of the Kadima party and, following the elections that year, she returned to a senior role within politics and served as Leader of the Opposition in the Knesset.
Her experience in government, foreign affairs, national security, and international diplomacy makes her particularly well qualified to represent Israel in Australia.
The relationship between Israel and Australia is founded upon longstanding friendship, shared democratic values, and extensive cooperation between our peoples. I am confident that Ambassador Livni will work tirelessly to strengthen these ties, expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest, and promote greater understanding between our two nations.
I respectfully request that you receive Ambassador Livni and accept her Letters of Credence as Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Commonwealth of Australia.
