[Kingdom of Italy] Fenmeccania Conference on Next-Generation Air Attack

An invitation to attend the Fenmeccania Conference on Next-Generation Air Attack Capabiltiies and to discuss the development of a next-generation fighter jet at the new Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Turin would be sent to the Ministers of Defense of the following nations:

The nations were, perhaps at first glance, varied in that they had little in common with each other. However, underneath the exterior of nationalities they all shared one common denominator. Each country, in terms of it's air force, was heavily reliant on the graciousness of the United Kingdom, Sparrow Industries, and the United States of America in order to keep their arsenal of airships relevant. The conference that these countries were invited to is not exclusive, but any country wishing to attend that has not been invited must request access.

As the announcement was public, word of it would soon reach the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, who would pass it on to the Ministry of Defence. They, in turn, would consider it, and then send an email.

The e-mail from the Egyptian Ministry of Defense was flagged almost immediately upon receipt and quickly sealed. It was transferred up the chain of command to the Royal Air Force Chief of Staff and the Minister of Defense, the Honorable Giachetta Marchetti. As his eyes scanned the e-mail, he hummed softly to himself. While it was indeed problematic for the Egyptians to arrive due to the intended presence of the Israelis, there was going to be an easy solution to this all.

"Seat them far away from each other." He said to his secretary, handing off the printed e-mail.

A response was sent back to the Egyptians.

Hon. Assistant Minister,

Your presence at this meeting will be extremely fortuitous and it would be my honor if you would be our guest here in Turin. We believe that due to our close proximity through the Mediterranean, that your attendance at this conference will be the start of an everlasting friendship over the Sea. Our staff will send over details in regards to your hotel stay and transportation to the Jet Propulsion Laboratories. Security services will be provided to you and your staff.

With the simmering tensions between Turkey and Israel over Palestine, it was decided that the Minister of Defence was unable to attend the meeting due to the Security Cabinet meeting under unfortunate circumstances. It was decided that Brigadier General Danny Gold who was Head of the Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure within the Israeli Ministry of Defence was to attend the conference in Italy and would take a civilian flight onboard an El Al flight to Turin-Caselle Airport.

As a result of the annexation of South Africa, this correspondence would be forwarded to the Office of the Governor-General and ultimately dissemination to the Swedish Department of Defence who would in turn begin a review into the pros and cons of attending such an event. At present the development of the Swedish Royal Air Force and more specifically its air superiority program was progressing fairly successfully with the Saab Gripen NG, one of the most advanced jets available globally and as such it was deemed there be no benefit from attending this conference.

A short, private, response would be sent to the Italian government from the Department of Defence in Stockholm politely declining the invitation.

In an effort to not de-stabilize the region, and due to the proximity of Egypt and Israel at the meeting, the Turkish request would be politely declined by Fenmeccania. However, in private, a seperate offer would be extended for either Minister Akar or any Turkish diplomat to make a state meeting to Italy in order to discuss affairs in the region and a diplomatic outcome to the current affair with Israel, while also allowing a Turkish partnership in whatever may come through of the top-secret Aquila program. The connotations of such a message were clear: behave in the region, and it will pay dividends and rewards.

Meanwhile, seperately, all countries would be prepared to be received in Turin. Upon arrival and confirmation of all in attendance, the conference would begin.

Youssef Sabri Abu Taleb would board a regular EgyptAir flight to Turin. His position would not be disclosed, but two regular National Police officers had been assigned to his protection, and they had dressed in a Western suit.

In a few minutes, the plane would take off, and in a few hours the plane would land. As it circled Turin for the last time, a notice would be sent to the Italian Foreign Ministry, notifying them of the arrival of the Minister.

Upon arrival, the diplomats would be booked into their hotels. Each country's delegation would have access to a floor at the Turin Palace Hotel, a luxurious establishment that was commonly patronized by westerners visiting Turin. The floors would be constantly monitored by Carabinieri and CCTV, ensuring that nothing afoot would come up. Likewise, they would also be swept routinely for bugs and listening devices. In short, the stay in Turin would be a secure one. After a brief check in and a few hours of downtime, the diplomats would be ferried into waiting cars, where they would be taken to the building site of the new Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the primary brain-tank of the new Italian Space Agency.

Upon arrival, they would be shepherded into a conference room where the first presentation would be set to begin momentarily.

Minister Taleb marvelled at the Palace Hotel. He was impressed- not a lot of Egyptian hotels had this quality, save a few in Alexandria and the Presidential residence, the Heliopolis Palace. The Assistant Minister was used to watching on hard chairs at airfields in the deserts of Egypt, not in Italy in an excellent hotel and their own floor.

But he didn't stay long. After waiting for his cars, he watched as they were driven to the Laboratories, and then strolled into the conference room, making mental notes of everything in it.

Finally, he got to the conference room, and waited for the first presentation. As he waited, he got out a notepad and a pen, ready to write down anything important.

Deputy Minister from the Ministry of National Defense Klara Kowal would board a LOT Polish Airlines Embraer E-170 with two pilots from the 40th Aviation Squadron. They were trained MiG-29 pilots and were top of their class and unit in simulated dog fighting and aerial maneuvering. Their callsigns in their unit were Wilk-1 and Wilk-2. Wolf 1 and 2. Deputy Minister Kowal wore a simple suit and pants while the two pilots wore their dress uniforms. Assisting the three were two aides from the Ministry of National Defense and an aide from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Economy. They had a lot of power invested in them from their respective departments and the two pilots had a lot of technical knowledge of flying fast and performing high g maneuvers.

Upon arriving at the airport, they would introduce themselves to the Italian Representatives before gratefully boarding their vehicles to continue to the hotel. They were thankful for all of the security and would bask in the opulence of the Turin Palace Hotel. They would quickly freshen up before they were transported to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. After sitting in their assigned seats, they would all remove notebooks from suitcases and pens before introducing themselves to the other representatives. Before the conference would begin, Kapitan Monika Kulka would ask one of the Italians present if smoking was acceptable in the conference room.

The Assistant Minister, who was currently pacing around the room, met Deputy Minister Kowal warmly and greeted him cordially. He then offered his hand to the Deputy Minister, whilst his secretary introduced Minister Taleb to Minister Kowal.

Smoke lingered in Italian meetings, always, an Italian aide would offer to the Polish diplomat. Of course, it would be allowed.

However, almost as soon as he spoke, the doors to the room would open. The Director of Fenmeccania, Sir Pietro Schiavone, OKI would enter. He was a rather large man, swollen from excess due to a long retirement from the Italian Royal Air Force. Yet, his eyes belayed a certain alertness. After politely nodding to his aides, he immediately strode over to the lectern.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome, to the Fenmeccania Conference on Next-Generation Air Attack. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Pietro Schiavone and I am the Director of Fenmeccania."

He opened up his binder to retrieve his notes.

"We've all come from nations far and near. All our states have their inherent differences, whether in culture, capability, even in cuisine. It is rare to find something in common among the great men and women in this room. Yet, one thing is clear. We are all reliant on three entities for the safety of our nation. The Americans, the British, and Sparrow Industries. Why should these three countries have every say in how we wish to defend our nations and what we wish to defend it with? Well, gentlemen. Today, I present to you the first break-away from their hold on our safety. I present to you, the Fenmeccania Aquila."

An image was placed on the screen of a rendering, as well as a 3D model placed in the center of the room.

"Twin engine, Canard delta wing for reduced radar cross section, advanced next generation modular avionics, and best of all multi-role. The Russians have the MiG-29s and Su-27s, the Americans have the F-16, and whether world likes it or not, Italy will soon have the Aquila. Already, we are developing the I100, the power-unit of the aircraft, capable of producing over 11,000 pounds of force."

Pietro closed the image on the screen, lightening up the room. "Gentlemen, we are embarking upon a journey here in Italy that will allow us to defend our skies with this aircraft for the next four decades. We will have complete control of this aircraft's construction, development, and deployment. But, what we are offering here, is to share it's capabilities with you. This is a gargantuan effort, and we hope to be able to cooperate so we can defend our countries to the best of our abilities. Now, I will open the floor to questions."

The Poles stood from their seats as the Director entered the room before retaking their seats as he began to speak. The Klara would light a cigarette as the man would begin speaking, careful to not cause too much commotion so as not to distract anyone. As the pictures flipped onto the board, she felt the pilots lean forward in their seats inspecting the 3D renderings before them. They were looking for discrepancies and problems that would arise from such a new aircraft. They were formulating problems and solutions in their heads. Once the floor was open to questions, Wilk-1 would raise his hand.

"Sir, I am Pulkownik Alexie Dabrowski with the Polish Royal Air Force. First of all thank you for allowing us to attend but lets get to the matter at hand. I see you are employing delta wing configuration for the aircraft as well as lifting canards to assist with pitch control. As you may know, Delta Wing aircraft have a high induced drag at subsonic speeds, are there any ways you are attempting to combat these, such as a compound delta wing or ogival delta wing?"
