KLM Flight 1959, operated by a Boeing 737-9K2 (B739), departed Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (EHAM) on a routine scheduled service to Istanbul Airport (LTFM). With 174 passengers and 6 crew members on board, the aircraft climbs smoothly into the early evening sky before levelling off at FL360 (36,000 feet) as it cruises southeast across Europe. The flight has been uneventful. Passengers are relaxing, some watching films while others enjoy the inflight meal service. In the cockpit, the Captain and First Officer monitor the aircraft as it cruises under autopilot. Without warning, the calm is interrupted, a loud warning tone echoes through the flight deck as a red ENG 2 FIRE message appears on the Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS). The master warning lights illuminate and the fire bell begins sounding.

The First Officer carries out the Engine Fire memory items, bringing the right engine to idle before shutting it down completely while the Captain takes control of the aircraft. The engine fire handle is pulled, and the first fire extinguisher bottle is discharged into the engine, quickly the Captain would key his radio button while the First Officer hits the transponder with a 7770 General Emergency Squawk

"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, Istanbul Control, KLM One Niner Five Niner. Engine Two fire indication. Engine shut down, fire bottle discharged. Request immediate priority vectors to Istanbul." the Captain and First Officer eagerly awaited a reply...
