17th May 2012, 1635 (Local time), Hudson Straight

"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is the SS Horizon, we are sinking I repeat we are sinking! We have many on board injured" this would be repeated over numerous frequencies. SS Horizon a medium sized cruise liner was enroute to Ontario from the port of Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Unknown why a small hole breached the hull of the vessel and begun taking on water however onboard crews tried numerous times to stop the water from entering.

The vessel rocked side to side numerous times sending passengers flying before landing, passengers would have various injuries from minor to life threatening. The vessel stopped in its tracked, begun to cave to the right. The right side slowly sinking, slowly filling with water.

"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is the SS Horizon, we are sinking I repeat we are sinking! We have many on board injured" was again repeated more times hoping someone one would answer soon...

A Rhodesian merchant ship known as SS Shangani would receive the disturbing call for help from the SS Horizon.

"This is The SS Shangani speaking, we have heard your distress call and shall prepare to intercept your vessel as soon as possible. We advise your crew and passengers to wait patiently and pursue a orderly exit strategy. On another do please send us your cordinates."

The local Coastguard station receives notice of the MAYDAY alarm. 2 All Weather Lifeboats are scrambled by the coastguard escorted by a heavy icebreaker and will be on scene in less than 1 hour. Additionally, the Coastguard immediately requests immediate aid from the Royal Canadian Navy and Air Force.

From their base in RCAF Shearwater, a Lockheed CP-140 Aurora is scrambled north to intercept the stricken vessel. At the same time, HMCS Harry DeWolf(AOPV 430) and HMCS Margaret Brooke (AOPV 431) are scrambled from their base in CFB St John's to the Hudson straight.

At a national level, the situation will be monitored from Coastguard National HQ.

With the Aurora on scene, the plane begins an immediate search for survivors and for the wreckage of the vessel. The pilots split the search area into a large grid, flying through each section using it's FLIR camera to detect any traces of life. The aircraft will patrol until it reaches bingo fuel before returning back to Shearwater. Once it has left the area, a new aircraft will replace it with a fresh crew.

In the meantime, the small armada of vessels will support the aircraft by searching in a smaller section of the the grid. Due to the compact ice sheet in the Hudson, the search efforts will focus at the mouth of the Hudson Bay, noting that the chances of a passenger ship making it deep through the May Ice is highly unlikely.
