Operation Hatchet was authorized by the Army Council of The Irish Republican Army residing within the boundaries of The Republic of Ireland out of revenge for the treachery of France whose government in their infinite wisdom decided to side with The United Kingdom against the aspiration of a united and free thirty-two county republic of Ireland.

A unmarked black van would pull up to the French Embassy on a cold December afternoon, out of it came 10 operatives in civilian attire five of which would be deployed to the embassy and the remainder would cover the nearest exit route nearby with the intention of mopping up witnesses and escapees. There was to be no survivors.

The first group of five men (each armed with Barretta 92s) would enter the embassy's lobby heading over to the receptionist's desk where they would politely ask to see the ambassador on note of business.

They waited patiently.

The Receptionist at the French Embassy at Dublin would carefully watch these five (5) men. She would feel very strange when looking at these men that wore civilian attire. She would ask, “can I see your identification card please? We have right to stop you before you meet with the ambassador.”


The reason of checking identification card is to check whether these personnel have intention to apply visa to visit French Republic. The receptionist would feel weird when these men would ask to see French Ambassador. This situation is very unusual. Because to meet with French Ambassador, they would need to contact with Consulate General before they can meet with the Ambassador.


“The ambassador is not available to meet. Please contact the Consulate General.”

The Operatives presented to the receptionist some realistic looking forged identity papers and waited patiently hoping to obtain the access they so desperately desired. It all depended on this moment, the fate of the operation was already on the rocks.

They had expected something like this to happen but wondered if this ruse would work on her so as to enable the operation to commence as planned and not go the way of the botched operation conducted against Canada days earlier by fellow comrades.

"Here you go, miss....we contacted the consulate general a few days in advance and have our identification papers on hand. "

While they waited for a brief word from her they examined the embassy as if they were somehow under the spell of its looks or something...enchantment meets death.
