| PROJECT NAME | Vienna U-Bahn Rollingstock Upgrade |
| PROJECT COST | 1,325,000,000.00 |
| COMPLETION DATE | 22/07/2026 |
| PROJECT INFORMATION | Despite the Wien U-Bahn being famed for its efficiency and commuter-friendly experience, as of 2008, the network operates an old, now outdated fleet of rolling stock. The ‘Silver Arrow’ fleet manufactured as early as 1972 consists of 504 operationally active train cars, constituting 85% of the U-Bahn fleet. The previous government introduced plans to partially phase out the ‘Silver Arrows’, replacing trains with the newer Type V class. However, these plans only aimed to replace some of the trains, until the Type V made up just 25% of rolling stock by 2010. Under the transportation modernisation plan of the imperial government, by 2010, all of the ‘Silver Arrow’ fleet of the Wien U-Bahn will be replaced by Type V, increasing passenger capacity, comfort, travel speed and operational efficiency. The upgrade of rolling stock will also apply to U6 (Line 6) of the U-Bahn. Technically, the U6 is a light-rail line, unlike the heavy-rail lines of U1-U4, despite its appearance. Currently operating 70 E6/C6 train cars introduced in 1980, these will be replaced by the new T/T1 trains. With shorter dwell times, faster acceleration and improved reliability, the modernisation of rolling stock is estimated to increase the U-bahns capacity by 22% to 25%, translating to 105 - 115 million additional passenger journeys per year. The rolling stock will be manufactured in Simmering-Graz-Pauker, Florisdorf, Vienna. |
