PROJECT INFORMATION | The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Border Railway is a key transport infrastructure project in the modernization plans of the ethiopian government. It will serve both passenger as well as cargo trains and reduce travel and transportation times and cost significantly across the country. With a standard gauge it will have a total length of 550km and connect Addis Ababa and the border with neighbouring Djibouti and its ports. Along its route it will connect all major cities and towns, providing quick access to and from those locations and direct link to the nation's capital without having to rely on road transportation. In addition to the mentioned passenger transport it will have a significant part dedicated to cargo trains, reducing logistic costs of agricultural and mining operations in the central part of the country. It is expected to have a total freight capacity of 24.9 million per year. It will be double-tracked almost along its entire course. The invested money also includes the construction of new and expansion of existing passenger and cargo terminals and its connecting infrastructure. Also included is the new rolling stock and locomotives of different kinds. The line is projected to end inside ethiopian territory, just before the border with Djibouti. The extension in the foreign country is a future possibility depending on bilateral negotiations. |
