PROJECT INFORMATION | The Grand Ethiopian Rennaisance Dam (GERD) Is the main element within the new "Ethiopian Reweable Energy Revolution" Project which is aimed at increasind the energy production based on renewable resources and creating and excess allowing energetic independence and export. The dam will be build in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, near the border with Sudan on the waters of the Blue Nile River and have a height of 145 meters, a length of 1,780m and a total volume of 10,200,000m3. Regarding the reservoir it will create and draw the water from, it will cover a total surface of 1,874km2 with a maximum water depth of 140m. The catchment area will be of 172,250 km2. As for the generation part and energy output, it will feature two 375MW francis-type turbines with a total estimated annual generation capacity of 15,76 GWh. It will be operated by "Ethiopian Electric Power", a state owned public company. It is estimated that once constructed it will be among the biggest hydroelectric dams in the world. The corresponding environmental impact studies have been concluded and part of the investment money is being dedicated to relocating inhabitants living within the flooded area to lower the impact on local fauna. |
