PROJECT NAME | Green Nile Initiative: Powering Ethiopia’s Future with Clean Energy |
PROJECT COST | 17,000,000,000.00 |
COMPLETION DATE | 06/12/2025 |
PROJECT INFORMATION | The Green Mile Initiative is a 100% government sponsored and funded project in Ethiopia that aims to continue growing its power capacity but will mainly focus on diversifying away from traditional biomass and hydropower reliance by investing other renewable energy sources. It will also aspire to expand exports, leveraging its abundant hydro, wind, solar, and geothermal potential. The Project will include several different key areas: Wind Energy: Promote programs like the Assela Wind Farm (100 MW in Oromia), Ashegoda (120 MW) and Adama I & II (~324 MW) Solar Energy: Scale up utility-scale and decentralized installations. Build the Metehara Solar Park (100 MW), GAD II (125 MW) in Somali Region and Weranso (100 MW) in Afar Geothermal Power: Fast-track geothermal sites in the Rift Valley. Initiate projects in Tulu Moye (50–150 MW) and Corbetti (500–1000 MW) Waste‑to‑Energy: Expand on the Reppie plant (25 MW) in Addis Ababa to convert urban waste into reliable power Modernizing Transmission & Grid Access: Enhance the national grid with high-capacity lines (e.g., 132 kV to 500 kV), smart grid tech, and regional interconnections across the East African Power Pool. Also build decentralized mini‑grids to serve remote and off‑grid communities effectively. Energy Efficiency & Sectoral Decarbonization: Government program to roll out efficient cooking stoves (electric, biogas, improved biomass) to reduce deforestation and cut reliance on traditional fuels Promote electric vehicles (EVs) by expanding charging networks, provide tax incentive for new EV vehicles and consider increasing taxes on oil fuel/diesel imports. Electrify public transport, rail, and industrial systems to shift demand toward renewables accross all major urban centers. The program would be of public nature, remaining only details relevant to national security private. |
